Well I guess nowadays they do, although personally I think their pop sound isn't terrible. But back in the day *puts on glasses* they reworked and redefined the meaning of being rock idols by positioning themselves as gods and saviours of music. It was a pretentious thing to do, of course, and they're still a very pretentious group of people, but the music was good so I'll excuse them for it.

For different reasons. U2 is basically the same as Britney Spears or any other pop-schlock. Generic, uninspired music for generic, uninspired people.

Nickleback has a ridiculously shiatty singer who makes us extremely jealous of deaf people. The only reason they gained popularity was due to Clear Channel's cost-cutting measure of having one guy select the music for all their stations nationwide. And that one guy is deaf, apparently.

They started out a little different from all the other bands and have a distinctive sound. Then Bono got arrogant and the band's music got ridiculously preachy (that's when I stopped listening to them), and these days Coldplay sounds more like U2 than U2.

imho, This Spiderman album is U2's best in manymany years. They found a way to
1. not try to save the world.
2. not be cripplingly self conscious about not trying to save the world.
