There's a pretty good reason why that happened.

And it's that Nickelback is only slightly less awesome than rectal cancer.

When I was in high school, I went to a $15 Headstones concert at a tiny bar. The opening band, Nickleback, which I had never heard of, was pretty good. I bought their album after the show. I was drunk, but I think I might have bought it even if I was sober.

I know this won't make me popular with the Nickleback haters on Fark, but: Nickleback is a pretty good opening band for a $15 show.

/less than a year later, they were all over the radio and had re-released the album on a real label.

My problem with Nickelback isn't that they make bad music. I mean, it's not terrible music.

My problem is that it's generic as all hell, and they're the living embodiment of "sellouts hitting it big". I refuse to endorse or support that.

I have a similar story, although I can't remember who it was that they opened for. I don't think it was the Headstones, though. I saw those guys tonnes of times in the '90s. I brought my neighbour to the show (who was an older guy that loves his classic rock), and he still tells that story all the time.

I have a soft spot for Nickelback being good prairie boys and all. It's not my cup of tea, but if you're into straight ahead rock, it fills a niche. The hate, I don't understand.

The Nickleback meme needs to die. It was funny for a while but now it's just farking dumb.

Nickelback>Tebow, I'll give them that. But not anything else.

I promise that Nickelback will die in a not so tragic plane crash next year.

There's tons worse bands than Nickleback. Hats off to them making a good living at what they do.

I hate them because they're Canadian...with those beedie eyes and flapping heads.

For $15, it's worth seeing Kenny G live, especially if he's opening for a band you actually like. Back when I was in a band, I had some absolutely terrible acts opening for our group. Nickelback would have been a step up over the guy who confused feedback and screaming with music.

This is exactly why Nickelback is spot-on perfect for a Stuporbowl half-time wank fest.

With all the hundreds of thousands of bands and solo artists to have ever existed, and the millions of albums they've released, and the billions of songs on those albums*, I refuse to believe that spending five minutes listening to a song by Nickelback is ever the best option. Sure, the hate on them is played out to the point of cliche, and they don't seem to be as ubiquitous as they were a few years ago, but really, there is always something better to listen to. Always.

*My math may be a bit off, but you get the point

Why does Nickelback get so much hate? I can list more bands that suck worse, than ones that are better. Is it an internet thing gone amok? I've never heard any of them being a douche. I've never heard any of them saying they were the greatest rock band ever. Correct me if I'm wrong please, I want to understand.

If you don't like their music that is fine but this hate is more than people just not liking their music.

I think it's just because they're the Kleenex or Tylenol of shiatty bands.

In all honesty I think people hate them because of Chad Kroeger.

It was the same thing with Creed. People hated the band mainly because of Scott Stapp. The band disbanded and a majority of the group members went on create Alter Bridge without him (which has a better sound in my opinion).

I'd like Nickelback more if they'd have stopped making music 2-3 albums ago. I'm not afraid to say I liked their first 3 albums. The recent stuff...nuke it from orbit.

I never dug them because their music is far too simplistic. In fact, they've written the same song around 3 times. But what irks me the most, and it's not really their fault, is some of their fans. These fans are the same type of girls who scream "WOOOOO!" when that Buckcherry "Crazy Biatch" song comes on and they dance around like idiots not realizing how demeaning that song is. That's not Nickelback's fault at all, but there is a bad association in my mind linking them to those idiots. Kind of like a taste aversion. I wouldn't sign a petition or anything, my hate isn't that deep, but my dollar will never play them on a jukebox.

The thing I don't get. Nickleback is criticised for making mindless generic rock, and yet AC/DC has been doing it for 30some odd years (post Bon Scott). And, people have been swalling that ACDC shiat the whole time, like it's crack.

Does "airplay" even matter any more? With all the other ways to get music nowadays (iPods, satellite radio, internet radio/other internet services, hell, even CD players if you're still a hold-out), who is still stuck being limited by what gets played on terrestrial radio? I guess the answer is Nickelback fans. And country fans.

As far as the "play instruments and write songs," that's setting the bar pretty low for music standards. All that means is that it's probably not auto-tune pop or commercial rap, which is really just the entry-level requirement for anyone over 16 who remotely gives a crap about quality music.

I actually heard a story that almost makes me respect them, though I can't be sure it is true.

Nickleback did a show for a radio station and a DJ talking to Chad Kroger off air asked him why since all his influences are pretty badass rockers Nickleback makes such "wussy" rock. Kroger said something like, ever see the crowd at an AC/DC show? It's a bunch of sweaty dudes. I got into music to get laid, so I play music women like.

I'm a devout metalhead, therefore could care less about popular bands and the quality of their music, but there's nothing more frustrating than sitting at work 8hrs a day listening to shiatty pop, or commercial rap or electronic samples repeating the same songs every 2 hours. A guitar chord sounds like heaven after listening to David Guetta, Nicki Minaj etc the whole day.

I just hate sitting at work, having the radio play hours and hours of electronic samples with autotune

As someone who owns Disturbed's first three albums, this makes me laugh. Because I know it's true.
