It is child abuse to lock your kid in the closet for hours on end.

This means that 100% of all timeout related punishment is child abuse, and anyone who would even consider it does not understand discipline, and is just waiting to abuse children.

I can't believe you still lived with your mother when the xbox was out. What are you 12?

Well, let's hope they don't dump a bucket of pig's blood on her at the local prom...

Yup.

The only thing that you can do that's not child abuse is let them run slipshod over you, the neighbors, the teachers, and society as a whole.

Was that last week subby?

Authorities alleged that on Oct. 29 the mother hit her 13-year-old daughter three times with a stick and then locked her in a closet for six hours as punishment for "bad" grades, said Costa Mesa Police Sgt. Phil Myers.

This might be the reason for the misdemeanor charge.. not the closet time.

James!: I can't believe you still lived with your mother when the xbox was out. What are you 12?

The Xbox is 10 years old, Subby could be 21 and still had an Xbox as a kid.

so, the difference between punishment and child abuse is if you lock the door or not?

I didn't get sent to my room when I was young, or sat in the corner. I got sent across my road (after my mom spanked me) to tell my dad that I was supposed to be punished. Then I would spend the next 4-5 hours doing manual labor around the farm (usually involved cleaning up hog manure).

This was also the punishment for my parents hearing me say "I'm bored"

These days, ANYTHING you do to a kid can be considered abuse. Glad my one and only's married and out on his own.

I'd be scared to even LOOK at a kid nowadays.

Why is everyone glossing over the beating with a stick part? It's one thing to lament the alleged coddling of today's youth and quite another to excuse physical abuse.

It's funny to read the comments section on the article and note all the people pointing out that they were treated similarly and "turned out fine". No you didn't, you turned out to be an asshole who is okay with other people beating their kids.

What kind of grades justify getting locked in a closet and beaten to these people anyway?

I suspect the anti-corporal punishment brigade is still in the Sweden thread.

I faced a similar punishment as a young Yomoxu, but my offense was getting suspended from grammar school due to fighting. Though to be fair, I was locked in the basement. More room to move around, weird old junk to look through.

That's nothing! One time I went to Best Buy to buy Call of Duty and they were out, so I threatened to come back and shoot them in the parking lot, and they acted like I was the bad guy.

Mostly because almost none of us would consider being struck three times to be a "beating", unless the strikes were unusually savage and left marks that lasted longer than what we'd consider a reasonable period, which I doubt we collectively agree on. Getting switched isn't an unusual or particularly cruel punishment.

define "stick".

are we talking your standard-issue switch or something more robust like a broom handle or pool cue? most kids today have so many toys and gadgets that "go to your room" isn't much of a punishment

Three whacks across the back of the legs with a switch seemed to be standard punishment back in the day.

We do not know the size of the stick, the force of which it was applied, and the area which it was applied to. If I went out and found a club and hit my child in the head with it three times like I was aiming to the fences, then yes I would consider that abuse (and would probably kill him)

I'm sure there are many Catholics around here who got the knuckle rap with the ruler as children. Is that abuse? Basically you are getting hit with a stick as well.

When I was a kid getting hit by a stick was called a punishment not a crime.

Here's a scenario for you pansies. You're sitting in a bar having a beer, and there's a guy on each side of you. You can talk to one of them and befriend him. Who would you want to have a conversation with? The pansy that wept and called CPS when mommy gave him a swat on the bottom or the who grew up with "abuse" and brushed it off? The "abused psycho" (as you like to frame us) is always more interesting. Also, who would you want backing you up in a bar fight? What if someone mugged you on the walk home? It always ends up in favor of the guy who won't shiat himself as soon as his bubble of false reality is shattered.

We took our licks and lived with it. We are the 99%, and you are the 1% of crybabies.

My dad never beat me. Mom used a fly swatter until I laughed one day. She went and got a piece of Hot Wheels track, and we saw who was laughing after that.

BreezyWheeze: "Made" a D? "Made"? You must be old. Who the hell uses the verb "to make" referring to grades?

It's an extremely common phrase in certain regions. Few English teachers (or would you prefer the pedantic Teachers of English) would care if presented with the phrase "make a grade" rather than "earned a grade". English is a living language, and pedants trying to hold on to old guard of what they learned are simply showing their lack of knowledge.

my grandma used to do that. i would come bachk with a long straw or pice of shiat little weak limb so the she would just wip me with the belt. i'm fine with it, i know the shiat i did when i was little i should have been beatin more.

Being locked inside a small, probably dark room is totally the same as not being allowed to leave your room. Totally. There's absolutely no traumatic effect associated with confined spaces or restriction of sight as punishments, least of all on a young teen.

As for punishments: my family gave away all my books when I was caught reading Harry Potter. They left me the bible and the dictionary. I think I would rather have them beat me. (they spanked usually, I guess they didn't think it was working)

The wooden spoon is the corporal motivator in my household. The kids take it seriously, generally just mentioning it gets results. Taking away privileges and favored toys too.(DFS came to take away the American Girl doll twice now, last time we told her the foster parents are thinking of adopting her permanently)

Lord, my mother would still be in prison. We used to get it with switches, which you had to go get for her. Richard Prior told a very funny story about this old custom that is now considered child abuse.

Six hours is a long time, though. But putting a kid in a closet for time out is a pretty god idea. It they aren't bored, you're doing it wrong.

Parents these days are pansies. I run my house like a drill sergeant, I'm firm but fair. My wife's friends all say I'm "too hard" on the kids taking away privileges, banishing them to their room, making them right the wrongs etc. They send their kids to a waldorf school where a proper punishment is a soft talk of encouraging positive words......fark that.

Meanwhile their kids are outside shooting out the windows of my garage with a bb gun little shiats.

Well, it would be fair to assume that the drill sergeant routine makes you less popular with the kids. :-/
