Wow. I'm not gonna lie, I clicked the video knowing I'd be pissed off at the protesters. There are so many where it's the tarded protesters who just go to far and you know what, you got what's comin to you. Then I watched the first 5 seconds. Holy shiat.

I predict this thread is going to be a dichotomy of posts. People who have watched the video and people who have not.

At around 0:41, in the lower left corner, you can see a cop sneak up behind a student and hit him several times in the back of the head with his baton.

But I'm sure the department has a perfectly acceptable excuse for this.

This. That was disgusting, and I have a feeling this thread is going to do a great job helping me fill out my "Obvious Troll" list.

Yeah, cops started that one. I didn't see any of them assaulted before they started swinging.

I watched this the first few times and thought it was just a rogue cop that started it. I was even kinda surprised that the response from the other cops was to join in the batoning rather than to quick stop the first cop from overreacting. Then I re-watched it focusing on your guy.

Watch from the 0:00 to the 0:05 mark and focus on that guy and the cop behind him. He got the greenlight from the cop behind him. He turns left and that guy gets ready, then he turns right and you can see the cop behind him get ready. You can even hear someone say "here they come."

Beating up kids with sticks. They're mothers must be so proud.

Ballsy kids for standing their ground and not fighting back. I would have been arrested after the first "poke" for defending myself against an unprovoked attack by armed thugs.

Reminds me of the denver police. When the DNC came to town in 2008 they proudly wore shirts that stated, "We get up early to beat the crowds" with a picture of a cop standing behind the text holding a baton.

Here is another video from The Daily Cal Link (new window)

Around 3:28pm this afternoon, riot police were called in to take down the tents erected by Occupy Cal protestors. The protestors linked arms to form a line in front of the tents which caused a violent confrontation and a number of arrests.

that being said I had to laugh because as the front row was getting jabbed by batons and backing up the rest of the crowd was pushing forward in a sign of solidarity. Meanwhile the kids in the front row are no doubt thinking to themselves "WTF!? You get up here and take a beating you farking a**holes"

Here is another article that gives more info Link (new window)

"On Monday, the UC Berkeley administration sent an email to students stating that setting up any encampments on campus property would not be tolerated.

But when Occupy Cal protesters voted overwhelmingly Wednesday to pitch tents on the lawns outside of Sproul Hall despite the warning, clashes with police ensued - the exact result campus officials had said they hoped to avoid."

"But when Le Grande followed his expression of sympathy with a warning that police would be called if protesters set up an encampment on campus property, the response was vehement. He proposed that protesters remain on site 24/7 for a week as long they avoided setting up tents or sleeping on-site. Protesters responded by chanting "bullshiat" as he finished speaking.

The protesters' opposition to the administration's proposal came after several violent interactions between demonstrators and police on the UC Berkeley campus since 2009, the most recent of which occurred when protesters and police clashed Sept. 22 in Tolman Hall.

According to the campus Student Code of Conduct, "camping or lodging on University property other than in authorized facilities" is prohibited."

Some things never change. Pretty soon a kid or 6 is going to end up dead, and then the fires will start. I was hoping the powers that be would have learned a lesson from the last farking time this happened, but no. Way to go, humanity.

What the fark. Usually there is at least some sense that everyone is super on edge and someone sets the whole mess off and before you know it war were declared, but this is ridiculous. Oh look, some girl is looking at me, I think I'll jab her in the stomach with a baton.

lennavan: Watch from the 0:00 to the 0:05 mark and focus on that guy and the cop behind him. He got the greenlight from the cop behind him. He turns left and that guy gets ready, then he turns right and you can see the cop behind him get ready. You can even hear someone say "here they come."

I couldn't make out any of the words. Despicable behavior either way, there is no call for the striking of a baton against anything short of an assaultive subject. I tend to grant some leeway in the riot-esque situations, because numbers do count for something and all the riot gear in the world won't save you if the protesters completely lose it, but you still don't first-strike with the baton, ever.

That said, I wonder if it would have been any different if the police started physically enforcing the university's right (Berkeley is private right, so it would have the right to remove people from its property?) to get the protesters removed and a handful pushed back against the forceful removal - at that point the batons would be used lawfully anyways.

Terrible situation. I expect Oakland police to pull shiat like this, I do not expect a liberal university to sick the cops on protesters. Did they even do that back in the 60s?

I would think that "getting beat by riot police" would be a requirement for graduation at Berkeley. Heck this was probably just freshman orientation.

It doesn't even help their cause. Those students could have been isolated, handcuffed (or ziptied), and removed one by one.

And having looked at it again, I agree with lennavan that it was an ordered action. I guess at least we should be thankful they were just doing (relatively) mild jabs and not going for the skull crushers.

It was ordered. The school told the protestors not to set up tents or the police will be called to remove them. The protestors set up tents anyway and the school called the police to remove them. The protestors then formed a human chain to block the police from removing the tents. So the police decided to use force against the protestors to get to the tents and to remove them.

I mean the police in front were definitely taking action to break the stalemate on order. I don't know if it was a direct order to start poking people and the one guy started the trend or not though. Disgusting either way.

Mawson of the Antarctic: Jesus Christ, that video made me sick.

Let's be fair. Things don't change overnight. 35 years ago, the police would have been siccing dogs and firing tear gas and rubber (or real) bullets and beating people half to death.

Now it's different, and when the cops DO go overboard, there's actually repercussions. Not really fair repercussions (can you say "paid leave"), but better than 35 years ago when the cops wouldn't get in any trouble, in fact they'd probably get a pat on the back from their brethren.

Progress is slow, and things like this can remind us that sometimes it's too slow, but hell at least it's a tiny bit of progress.

lordaction; I know of no college campus that is open to the public to camp out on. Let me know if you find one.

Yeah, there's that little known clause in the US Constitution that states you have the right to assemble, right to free speech, etc, except if it conflicts with a university's farking bylaws.

It means you go from being a free person living in a free country to a trespasser, because of some sign. Yeehaw.
