Dear Playstation:

Despite throwing your market dominance down a deep well with your arrogance and sluggish attempts at features the other consoles do better, you've managed to stay in the race just as the rumblings begin that Microsoft's next Xbox will pretty much be the Kinect 2.0.

You officially have a massive install base of traditional gamers, who hate everything motion control stands for, ripe for the taking - gamers who've already shown their concept of brand loyalty is whoever produces the best gaming environment for their buck (which is why they swapped from PS2 to 360 and would swap back again if you can prove there's a reason to).

If you muck this up, you deserve to remain in third place.

Sincerely yours,

Though I was shopping yesterday and noticed that the Wii with New Super Mario Bros was $150 while the Kintect (which didn't appear to come with any software) was the same price.I still don't know how people are justifying buying the damn thing.

Do you think that sort of feature is going to be wiped out from now on though? HD remakes / downloadable rereleases are all the rage these days...

I know you'd be going from HD to shinier HD, but if I was someone like Microsoft I'd be less likely to go "let's let people play those games from a few years ago that are not that much worse than what we've got now" and more likely to go "here's a Mass Effect trilogy re-release with the ME3 engine for all three games and FULL MOTION CONTROL!"

I am a gamer, with a preferance for PC. It is the single reason I have Boot Camp installed; although I prefer to get my geek on and get things running in Wine (yes, Wine in OS X for the added challenge).

I suppose it's moot really. Once the "720" comes out I'll be able to find spanky new 360's in Argos for £50 + 50 games + accessories type bundles the same as happened to the Xbox and PS2 when the current generation were released.

At which point I'll buy one and see what all the fuss was about.

Am I a blasphemer for wanting the ME2/3 gameplay bolted on to ME1 as well?

Because your squad's AI in that game in heavy combat situations still makes me shudder. That and their loot system turning into picking up 86 copies of the "insert generic badass thing here IV"

Still puts me off booting through all the games back to back.

Agreed, their various attempts to capture the feel of exploring the solar system have been patchy at best. Finding signals on planets in ME2 was great, but all the mining that went with it...less so.

Now to just keep our respective digits crossed that the multiplayer in ME3 isn't a) rubbish, b) too vital to getting the best ending, or even worse c) overrides a lot of mistakes you made across the three games and lets you cruise to complete victory.

\ Tali, Grunt and Mordin died on my ME2 playthrough, pretty much my three favourite characters. Do I replay or do I stick to my guns of honour and go on without them?

True. So are the next playstation and wii most likely.

will be smaller

My wager is it will be roughly the same size as the last two.
Not like size matters much with consoles.

and focus more on motion control.

Hmmm... sounds too rumor-ish.

They've thrown in big with Kinect, and making your body the controller kind of works, but not in a very accurate way yet. So its shaky on things like shooting commands.
To bridge that gap either the camera has to see my fingers or they need to put a button in my hand with some kind of wireless, remote controller, thing.

/the motion detection part is redundant.
/Everything we hear now is just a useless series of rumors.
/Like MS is going to confirm they are replacing the Xbox AHEAD of the holiday season.

Looks like the game will be all downloaded games from now on? Didn't look like there was a place for a disc.

In any case...I own a PS3 move, which would be better for games like golf or tennis. The thing is these companies just don't really design games fit for motion controls. Those usually are just social party games anyways. People/gamers who bought the Wii soon found this out.

As for PC,,,Sure its great that they maybe kill on graphics, but when you have to constantly upgrade, or know which chip will or will not work, its a huge turn off for many. Not all of us will spend that much for a game machine constantly. You also sit hunched over a PC in the corner of a little room. Its not the same. But then Micorsoft keeps trying turn game machines into PCs. I like when you could play face to face with people actually in the room with you. That why I went console to begin with.

Totally agree with the Eurogamer opinions, one of the best reviews I have seen on a mainstream site (although the "we allow the lead dev to criticise our opinion in a special piece because we only gave it 8/10" is a bit shameful.)

I just enjoy the ride deeply. If Uncharted is everything that's wrong with this generation of games - the linear game becoming an on-rails QTE come shooting gallery full of the ridiculous until it barely registers emotion - at least it does it with a storyline and characterisation that for me at least hits all the right buttons with the world's biggest joy hammer.

And as for LBP, the platforming is relatively poor compared to the best, but I can't see how people think it sucks. I'd hate to see games like that go into the "failed experiment" bin, and there aren't many family friendly games these days that offer some real depth too.

YMMV, of course :)

This generation has been really weird for Sony. I don't think anyone could have expected them to go toe-to-toe with the XBox the way it has. It *should* have been able to leverage the hefty lead it had with the PS2 and retain it's dominance. Especially when the first couple runs of 360's started red-ringing themselves.

It seems like Sony is great at making a powerful system. Not sure if it will be enough to reclaim it's lead and with the strong Yen, it could be even more of a challenge for them to turn a profit.

Sony became arrogant and got stuck on the idea that they are the greatest. Their Cell processor and all the shiny tech they built into the PS3 was super slick, but they forgot one important detail. That is console buyers don't give a flying fark about the bleeding edge, they just want good enough at a price of around $200 for the console and $60 a game.

Microsoft understood that, so while the X-Box 360 is no where near as powerful as the PS3 it set the game market, because it was first to market, initially cheaper, and allowed developers to use their current tool set to build games.

Unfortunately Microsoft also cannibalized the PC games market, which is where traditionally bleeding edge tech was first seen as PC gamers would upgrade to meet the demanding specifications. I attribute this to the fact that the X-Box 360 is nothing more then a PC running a specialized version of XP.

If you are making a for profit game why would you target a small sub-section of all gamers? Which is why PC gamers complain about dumbed down games and you see a same day release across all platforms. This plays to the X-Box 360 strength, cheap just good enough hardware, easy to use development tools, large market and allowed Microsoft to exploit the PS3s disadvantages, expensive hardware, hard to use specialized development tools, hard to program to advanced hardware.

The X-Box sucks when compared to the PS3, but because of how Microsoft manipulated the market and Sony's hubris it sets the market.

That and this generation being the first console gen that truly made online multiplayer the biggest game in town, and Live capitalising on that in the biggest way. Live is such a good service in comparison to the other services, that people are willing to fork out around £30 a year for the honour. I have plenty of friends who own both consoles, but it's always the 360 versions for multi-platform because not only are they aiming to have the biggest friend base possible to play with, but they are connected to their entire friend base regardless of game. I know people who don't play on PS3 because trophy scores mean nothing, but their "cheevos" do. Even avatars, which got mocked roundly at first, are now universally liked to the point where you think of the Xbox avatars over the Miis that popularised the idea in the first place.

When COD sells millions, and the best experience is on Live with COD...there's no wonder the likes of Kotick are whining about not getting a piece of the 360 subscription pie.

Dear Microsoft,

Sony has so thoroughly farked over their console fan base with numerous security breaches and unconscionable Terms of Service that many PS3 owners are willing to jump the fence. However, if you make motion control and integral part of your next console, to the point that it is required for playing many games, we will skip the XBox 720 or whatever you want to call it. Gamers do not want to try and play games by waggling retarded sticks or making obscure and uninterpretable gestures for the Kinect. We want to sit on our collective asses and play a damn game. All we really want is an upgraded version of the XBox 360 without artificially small and expensive hard drives. Integration of Blu-Ray would be nice, but I won't even consider that a hard requirement.

Please make that happen.

Sincerely,

bemis23

Sony,

I don't care what hardware, platform exclusives, or new technology you come up with for the PS4. You have so completely lost any confidence that consumers had in you by multiple security breaches (and the lack of communication about those incidents) and by attempting to force users into signing away their basic legal rights you have left me with nothing but utter contempt for you. While I have enjoyed my PS3, please know that until you stop farking over legitimate consumers of your products that I will never purchase another Sony product ever again. This includes *everything* you make - no HDTVs, no Blu-Ray player, no tablets, no computers, no audio equipment, no software...nothing. I hope you and your legal department all rot in hell you self-righteous pricks.

Sincerely,

bemis23

P.S. Seriously, burn in hell

Dear Gamers,

While I know the compulsion to purchase the latest generation Sony hardware can be strong given their many exclusive titles, try to resist the urge. Sony hates you. Please consider your purchases carefully and do not support companies that seek to trample on your rights as a consumer and hold you in such disdain that they fail to even acknowledge major security breaches that include the loss of personal financial information until several weeks after the breach occurs. While the PS2 was a game-changing platform, and the PS3 was incredible hardware, no amount of technical innovation is worth this kind of treatment. Do not blindly sign Terms of Service without reading. It is time for gamers as a group to grow up and let the entertainment companies know that we won't be easily led into circumstances that leave our personal information easily vulnerable to attack without legal recourse for negligence that does not depend on biased arbitration.

Sincerely,

bemis23

I'm buying a 2nd black 360 for my back room this Xmas...

Reading this, you get that initial geek urge to just wait and hold off for the new console...then I remembered...you wait a few months after a console debuts, and you'll get a better modified unit that doesn't burn your house to the ground.

If it comes out Xmas 2012...I can't wait for March 2013!

Olympus Mons: when you have to constantly upgrade, or know which chip will or will not work, its a huge turn off for many.

The long gap between consoles has pretty much put paid to this "constant upgrade" myth as well you know. A £300 gfx card from several generations ago (now retailing at £50) can pretty much equal or beat a 360 or PS3's graphics at 720P. If, when your GFX card was spanky new you paired it with a now ancient (but spanky new then) Core 2 Duo... congrats, you're outperforming a console.

PC Gamers haven't needed to upgrade for several years.

It almost seems like the PS3 was just a pawn in winning the HD-DVD/ BlueRay format wars. Now Sony has a great piece of hardware they aren't fully backing. There's been a few great games, but they keep focusing on bleeding edge technology rather than trying to make games more fun. They need more LBPs. Releasing older games in HD is awesome, but they need to release NEW games that are just as much fun as Sly Cooper and God of War. I'm willing to give up a fair amount of graphics to just have fun.

Oh, and NO ONE CARES ABOUT 3D GAMES SONY, NO ONE.

bemis23: Wall of letters

Do you genuinely think a large percentage of the PS3 userbase is ready to jump ship because of the Geohotz debacle and the security breach?

I'm not arguing with you about both of those situations not being good days in Sony history - they overreacted to the Linux issue in a way that trampled consumer rights to the ground, and although their security held up for years the flaw that wiped all that good work out was pretty stupid - I'm just asking if you think the general public have really cottoned on and/or care.

A large large % of PS users probably don't even know Linux can be put on the PS3, let alone had the capacity or will to do so. Hell, how many PS users know what Linux is? For them, the whole lawsuit debacle came down to a few hackers on the tv that one time in between recession coverage and the sports scores.

As for the security breach, we've had a lot of security issues this year. So many security breaches have been on the news that it just seems people will just blame "evil hackers" and be more careful in future - which in the case of Sony or Microsoft, just means buying prepaid points cards instead of hooking up the ol' credit card.

Again, not disagreeing with you, boo Sony for being heavy handed and inept. But just wondering whether you're overestimating the amount of people aching to jump brand.

The Sony hate may be wishful thinking on my part. I'd just like to see the gamer population as a whole take a stand against this kind of ridiculousness, instead of just being easily distracted by the newest shiny graphics and hardware. Sadly, I fear this is also wishful thinking.

Smarshmallow: Domino's Fiend: brand loyalty

What an idiotic concept.

Yeah, think that was the point I was trying to get at from the beginning - when it comes to gamers, we love developers, but we'll jump consoles the moment the better/more dominant machine emerges. Which is probably the way it should be.

PanicMan: It almost seems like the PS3 was just a pawn in winning the HD-DVD/ BlueRay format wars.

This thisity this this this. They succeeded with the PS2 in part because the DVD player was such a big step up from video tapes. Blu-ray just seemed like an expensive jump when DVDs were good enough and much much cheaper. You can't keep using consoles to sell the idea of a new tech in order to sell everyone the same content all over again. They've finally got a deep catalogue of exclusives, but it would be nice for any of the consoles to bring out a fantastic new IP.
