Forget Kermit, Gonzo, or Piggy.

Just give us Statler and Waldorf and it could work

^ Fully agreed, although having Animal forcefully "play off" the recipients after time is up could make for mighty interesting television.

I haven't watched the Oscars in over a decade, but I would give my left nut to see the Muppets host.

no it couldnt

I thought that they already got a Muppet to oversee the show.

What?

That's Brian Grazer?

www.blogforarizona.com

Would at least watch the first half hour of it if they did get the Muppets. But I suspect that with the narrow window of opportunity that they have between now and the show and the fact that it would be prohibitively expensive, I very much doubt that it will come to pass.

/but I've been way wrong many times.

I like this idea!

Practical concerns:

1. The Muppets can do live TV, they're that good, but it's not really their forte, is it? Spectacle wrought of endless retakes is one of the main reasons they're so great. Even the classic Sesame Street moments of Muppets talking to kids are culled from hours of tape.

2. Puppeteer wells built into the stage, or Avenue Q style, where unrecognized guys are just standing there holding up the hosts? Are the puppeteers in tuxes?

3. Which Muppet introduces the death montage?

But yeah, I'd watch my first Oscars in years, and ratings trump all. I'd hire them.

The Muppets would be awesome though. Especially Pepe, okay?

The only reason I'd ever watch an award show again is if I were getting one

My only concern in supporting this idea is that I am sure Rizzo the Rat will chew the scenery more than the Oscar nominees.

And he'd probably make a joke of it by chewing on part of the Mann Theater.

/that rat must die

The Muppets did Monday Night Raw live 2 weeks ago, and that doesn't have near the lead time as the Oscars.

But the reason it won't work is because too many nominees and members of The Academy take themselves way too seriously, and that would go from amusing to tiring within an hour.

Only the on-stage part was live. All the backstage stuff and W&S was pre-taped.

Considering the context of all the hubbub about the Oscars and the reasons people are pulling out or being forced out, they ought to go all-out and award Best Documentary to Two Girls; One Cup.

The best part is that we will get the the definitive list of Hollywood assholes. Have each presentation team be one human and one Muppet. The humans that manage to look awkward or upset are Definitive Hollywood Assholes.

I would love the Muppets, but, assuming they don't, I'd like to see Ryan Stiles host

I don't know why the fark Robin Williams has never been asked to host the Oscars. It's possible that it's not something he wants to do or there's politics involved but him hosting would be epic.

/wouldn't complain about the Muppets either

If the Muppets hosted the Oscars I'm sure we'd see somethign similar. A fairly minimalist presence live on stage and lots of previously recorded backstage antics and musical numbers. Not only would it be hilarious it might make it so the damn show doesn't run long and people can actually get through their acceptance speech.

They should get Neil Patrick Harris.

He would be fabulous.

I still want Danny Pudi and Donald Glover to host. The Muppets are timeless and could get the gig any year and it would be golden. Troy and Abed have a much more limited relevancy shelf life.

timharrod: 1. The Muppets can do live TV, they're that good, but it's not really their forte, is it?

The problem is one of logistics, as Muppets and humans can only really interact on specially-built sets.

/The sets for the Muppet Show were built a full floor off the ground so Henson and the crew could operate comfortability below.

I saw the world premiere of "The Muppets" at the Savannah Film Festival last Friday, so I'm getting a kick. Much better than I thought it would be. More Muppet Show than Muppets Take Manhattan, is what I'm saying.

/my kids loved it too
//won't stop singing "Mahna Mahna"

And hopefully they'd play the Muppet Show theme song over that montage.

I don't know why this would be a problem. It's not like they don't know when the show will be, nor is there really a problem of budget to worry about.

Whipping up a false floor isn't hugely hard.

That idea basically boils down to Frank Oz hosting the Oscars. They could do better, or a whole lot worse.
