Murder is unlawful killing.

If the government tells them to, it's not unlawful.

Hence, no.

nothing to worry about here folks, happens all the time. they have to thin out the weaker members of the tribe, so that they can be a more effective fighting force. you dont want to find out you have a weakling in the midst of battle, now do you?

emblematic?

most of the marines i know/knew who were enlisted were just normal, usually rather poor, members of the working or lower middle classes. they usually werent that bright or overly intellectual, but by no means dumb. just... yknow. regular Joes who had that sorta simple outlook on life like cops have. except without the sadism and hard shell around their humanity like what cops have from dealing with society's scum day in and day out for years.

theyre no worse no better than anyone else. i dont know why the US reveres its military servicemen and women with this godlike reverence; there are a lot of people who put their lives on the line for the jobs who dont get the same respect. we should be glad theyre there but the hero worship is overblown at best a little creepy at worst. maybe its just a backlash from vietnam when service personnel were said to be treated badly by the public who were unsympathetic to what these people had endured (and often against their will via the draft) and now peple are overcompensating.

One marine beaten to death, one jumped out of a window so they immediately assume the 2nd guy beat the first to death then jumped out the window? Now, I'm not saying it's aliens, but it's aliens. Invisibly infiltrated the barracks, beat that guy to death, and threw the other guy out the window. It makes a lot more sense than this nonsense "weather balloon" story they're putting out.

I should probably define my terms. Part of my definition of "men" or "man" or "adult" is someone who does something even though every fiber of their being wants to do something else. Courage is the suppression of appetite. I'm not saying only Marines are men or courageous men...

theyre no worse no better than anyone else.

Easy there kiddo. Shout as you may, there is superiority all around us. Don't go down the dark corridor of relativism. You will live a better life if you can fine-tune your awareness of what is better than you.

I do agree with you on the worship found these days in our country. It is nothing new to me. I am from a three-generation Marine family. The worshiping is a new development what with these two wars and all, but I've been doing it all along...

I saw that movie and, to this day, I don't see why there is a problem with ordering a code red. I know, I know, who cares? Well, I do, dammit.

The guy had an undiagnosed medical condition. He shouldn't have been there. The code red killed him because of said medical condition. That doesn't mean healthy people shouldn't participate in said activity. People with medical conditions might die if they had to do the same personal training the armed forces do each day; that doesn't mean they shouldn't do them.

A 'code red' was demonstrated as being an effective form of discipline in the movie. It just happened that the one guy, who was unfit to even be there to begin with, was also unfit to take part it in.

I still don't get it. Tom Cruise was the protagonist and Nicholson is supposed to be the 'bad guy', right? But the bad guy didn't do anything bad. If anyone should have been blamed for the guy's death, it should have been the doctors that evaluated him. But even that isn't criminal, it's people making a mistake. The whole movie could have/should have been resolved with a 15 minute conversation. 'Yeah - that guy that died during the code red, he had a medical condition. That's why he died. Huh, well, I guess we should drop the murder charges then, yup, that makes sense. Let's talk to the doc and see if we can't find a way to prevent this in the future.'

your first statement here is not untrue, i guess i just dont think i feel intrinsically inferior to marines or anyone else in any other branch of the military just because ive not served. :) Nor for that matter do i think serving in the military automatically qualifies one for hero worship and idolation.

Theyre doing what they need to do, and im doing what i need to do...

thanks for the service and i hope your family all served with distinction and have their bodies and minds intact.

Not off the top of my head...I want to say ConvincingSavant or FlyNavy...One of them called the other out or something. But I'm pretty sure it was one of them. Probably CS since the other guy says "Navy" in his ID :-D

I sort of agree, but there was ambiguity about whether the code red was ordered in order to help "train" the marine, or whether it was simple retribution for attempting to report the fence-line shooting by going outside the chain of command. The fact that the entire officer command structure lied about it and committed numerous crimes in an attempt to cover up the order suggests that it was retribution. Either way, the order from the "bad guy" resulted in (involuntary) manslaughter.

Also, the doctor didn't simply make a mistake - it appears that he was either completely incompetant, or else he deliberately falsified the medical report.

I realize we're debating the ficticious plot of a movie, but it seems that if this happened IRL, there would be enough ambiguity to warrant at least a grand jury investigation (or whatever the military equivalent is). *shrug*
