Article: Much of the problem stems from the agency's staff growth since the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. Back then, 9,700 headquarters staffers worked at seven locations; now, about 17,300 employees and contractors work at 40 separate sites across the country, including 22 in the Washington area.

fbi.gov: On September 30, 2011, we had a total of 35,576 employees. That included 13,900 special agents and 21,676 support professionals, such as intelligence analysts, language specialists, scientists, information technology specialists, and other professionals.

I heard on the radio a couple months ago that there aren't enough investigators to prosecute financial crimes because they were shifted to anti-terrorism work. The guy being interviewed didn't mention the huge growth. Maybe Congress can set a quota for agents assigned to non-sexy crimes.

I would suggest this as a HOTY candidate, but I don't want to be put on the no fly list, since I may have to fly commercial some day.

Yeah, this is at least headline of the month material. Well done.

I think this building should be condemned. There's serious metal fatigue in all the load-bearing members, the wiring is substandard, it's completely inadequate for our power needs, and the neighborhood is like a demilitarized zone.

When you're sticking GPS trackers warrantlessly on people who look at you queer you're going to end up needing to expand your paranoid abuse of basic freedom and constitutional rights.

They do have a vanity mirror, curling iron, hair clips, and some red bows in the Director's office though.

That's their problem: too many employees. It's clearly time to right-size some redundant personnel. I call for massive layoffs!

When I took it in 1992, it was a Smith .40, an MP-5, and I can't remember the third. We got to pose for a cheesy photo on the range holding dewat Tommy Guns. I think the tours have been for pre-screened only since 9/11.

Move the HQ, tear down Hoover, re-open the museum / tour someplace they can secure. DoT finally moved out of L'enfant Plaza, move the FBI.

Rumors, never substantiated, that J. Edgar Hoover was a transvestite, or gay. There is a story that some mob boss had pictures, of course even the most critical biographers and FBI historians say it's crap because the photos never saw the light of day even when the FBI under Hoover was cracking down on the mob.

They should rebuild at the current site, but go ahead and put the important parts underground - ala Resident Evil's 'Hive.' If they're going to have a cool semi-secret facility, at least as taxpayers putting billions into it, and wanting a functional government in time of an attack, it could be a cool building.

Pretty typical of old government domiciles. The security requirements have become far more stringent yet the budget for building or even just altering is atrocious. Unfunded mandates by and large.

Yea, it was kick ass, and the giant seized firearms vault with the Plexiglas front.

Yea, fark the FBI, was just having a chat with someone on google chat in Arabic, I tossed in a "hell NSA, hope you are having a great day" because I know that crap popped up on someone's monitor.

The neighborhood was horrible when I worked on 11th street in the mid 80's. Buildings were still boarded up from the MLK, Jr. assassination. Today? Not so bad.

why not radically modify the structure and blame it on a USA Army veteran? they quick-peddled it with success before, just ask Timothy.

As an applicant for a Special Agent position, the recruiter told me that they have people who are 100% through the application process and were assigned to go to Quantico for training - but they had to cancel the classes due to the budget crisis/cuts. They also have applicants partially through the process with no clear indication as to when any of the steps that need to take place to move them along will take happen because of budget concerns.

Not very promising for someone trying to re-apply...

Might I suggest that the problem is not that the building is too small, but the FBI is too big?

2011-11-09 11:17:44 PM
It's too small because they've grossly overhired since 9/11. Thankfully, they haven't continued to expand under Obama. The Bush administration made a completely understandable oversight during transition from Clinton. This wasn't unforgiveable, had they admitted it. Instead, in the face of the 9/11 PR problem, they overspent and created redundant security functions to make it appear there was something fundamentally wrong with the US security system, not with administration decision-making during the transition. It would have been much better if they had just admitted 9/11 transition errors and beefed-up security in some reasonable ways, while quietly hunting ObL (instead of driving him underground). The US would be in much better shape today, not just the J Edgar Hoover building.
