When anyone asks me who my personal hero is, Carl Sagan is always the first name that comes to mind.

Grateful that I had the opportunity to see him speak shortly before his death.

Cosmos made the the geek I am today.

I guess technically, he's still on the Pale Blue Dot. Unless they shot him into space. Did they shoot him into space?

FYI: Hulu is showing Cosmos right now.

He's buried in Ithaca, NY. However, carried on the Voyager spacecrafts are two golden discs, both of which contain a brainscan of Ann Druyan (Carl's wife) thinking about her love for Carl Sagan.

Out there, somewhere outside the solar system, two golden discs containing Ann Druyan's love for Carl frozen in time are floating into the cosmos.

I remember when Cosmos first came out. My entire family gathered in our little television room to watch. We marveled together at the artistry and insight of the episodes. The theme music still brings tears to my eyes.

Dr. Sagan suffered the slings and arrows of the scientific community for daring to "trivialize" astronomy. We all reap the benefits of his daring. He made us fall in love with the universe.

Thank you and happy birthday, Dr. Sagan!

Contact was preachy, snide, smug, garrulous and every time I look at the back cover I want to hit that guy. Oh and there are like 17 farking Mary Sues in that book.

2011-11-09 07:22:37 PM
All the love for this guy is completely lost on me.

And yeah I've read Broca's Brain, a Demon Haunted World, hell, even Contact.

And somehow I think you folks would be alot more judgement about his getting high every day if it was meth and not pot.

The need to get high every day/every other day is the sign of psychological problems/mental health issues, not something to be celebrated.

2011-11-09 07:25:16 PM
Does someone have the quote from him on how it is critical that we leave Earth since the sun will eventually devour the planet and everything we created here will be destroyed?

Nothing but respect and admiration for Carl Sagan... shame he couldn't have stuck around for a few more decades.

We won't make it that far -- as more numerous we become, the stupider we get as a species.

If you think climate change deniers are a problem, wait until "red giant deniers" get started. They will thwart any attempt at doing anything until it's too late to leave.

Conservatives are self-destructive by design.

I never said it. Honest. Oh, I said there are maybe 100 billion galaxies and 10 billion trillion stars. It's hard to talk about the Cosmos without using big numbers. I said 'billion' many times on the Cosmos television series, which was seen by a great many people. But I never said 'billions and billions.' For one thing, it's imprecise. How many billions are 'billions and billions'? A few billion? Twenty billion? A hundred billion? 'Billions and billions' is pretty vague... For a while, out of childish pique, I wouldn't utter the phrase, even when asked to. But I've gotten over that. So, for the record, here it goes: 'Billions and billions.'

He died far too young. I have to wonder, though, how he would view the current state of things--with optimism or despair. Whenever I see some of the anti-science crap the Republicans spew....

The Demon-Haunted World was prophetic. He'd probably hate being called a prophet, though.

\hooked me on astronomy for life with Cosmos
\\got the series practically memorized

Due to some insane scheduling in earlier years, I found myself with only 12 hours of classes required for my final term. I took Sagan's introductory astronomy class strictly to hear him lecture. I still remember his comment on von Daniken's "Chariots of the Gods": "Von Daniken sees extra-terrestrial intervention in everything he doesn't understand. Since he doesn't appear to understand anything, he sees them everywhere."

It just seems like a bunch of Sagan-worship going on. The man was brilliant, okay, but he wasn't without his flaws. Back about the time of the first Gulf War, Sagan came on the news saying that if Saddam set fire to the Kuwaiti oil rigs, that we'd all be plunged into nuclear winter or some such. Well, Saddam set 'em afire, and they got put out, and we're all still happily on the pale blue dot complaining about global warming.

I don't see anything wrong with honoring his accomplishments, but geez.

CSB. If I ever took a class with Sagan, I'd break that story out quite regularly.
