Finally, a tablet device that caters to underwater bloggers.

2011-11-09 04:40:36 PM
My iPad has probably spent >300 hours beside our tub and hot tub, getting splashed, fingered with wet hands, and subjected to rain and snow, as well as temperatures as cold as -30C for hours on end. On more than one occasion, my wet fingers have been frozen to it's aluminum skin.

Durability is actually one of the real unsung features of tablets, and the iPad in particular from my experience.

Well, okay, I know some people fetishize Apple products, but this is ridiculous.

I'm so glad I wasn't the only one who went there.

My iPad sprang into action when my first child was a breach. It jumped inside my wide and unwrapped the umbilical cord from the baby then proceeded to birth him. It was splashed, fingered with bloody hands, even frozen to a genital wart my wife was having taken care of while she was in the stirrups.

So does the water act as a huge antenna, or as a shield? I need to know, as my SCUBA vacation will be absolutely ruined if I can't update Facebook from the bottom of the Great Barrier Reef.

Be sure to close those port tabs before bragging about your water proof tablet.

When the most significant feature of your iPad competitor is something trivial like "waterproof," you have already failed.

Again.

novel, seems like it would be a benefit to some folks in the field and such where your tablet could take more abuse...

personally I don't spend much time blogging in the hot tub, or updating my facebook page while I shower

A shield - unless you have a repeater at the surface to make the jump from transmission of one form of matter to another (water to gas).

Heh, and since this is a geek section thread - here's a HAM guy going into the specifics of transmitting through water, into the air. Link (new window)

But, but... iPads aren't just shiny toys! They're an integral part of business field work, right?!

Shield, sadly. Did some work in school with a ROV. GPS doesn't work too well underwater.

I use mine while soaking in the tub... Put it in a large size ziplock baggie (or two if you're completely paranoid) and it's perfectly fine. Same for my EVO, same for my Kindle.

How many electronic devices do you need to take a bath?

if you are taking a bath to get clean, get clean and get out and on with your day
if you are taking a bath to relax.....try relaxing, close your eyes, think reflect....dont multitask

I know some tech divers that watch stuff on their ipod flips during deco stops. So I imagine that if this can go to any significant depth and still function it will catch on with a crowd that doesn't mind spending money on toys.

The iPad 3 will be waterproof.

And people will be waiting in line at midnight to buy it.

This is the sort of thing of why I told the boss that going android would be better then apple. The drop tests alone should have been enough to convince him. When only one company has control, no one can win but them, especially the people who buy it. Now for a class one div two tablet for android.

So, if you watch the video, you'll realize that subby is the only one that thinks waterproof is the most significant feature. Well, maybe you too.

Trolling aside, due to refraction between air and water (along with electromagnetic waves in the radio spectra being absorbed/scattered by water much quicker) it becomes increasingly more difficult to transmit/recieve the deeper you go.

Now, I did have a friend place two phone calls to me, on purpose, at the bottom of a pool, to prove it was water resistant. Call clarity was meh, but then again when I put my head underwater and heard his bubbling screams into the mic it sounded realistic, so I dunno.

/it just wasn't water proof. Dingus had to get the thing replaced.

2011-11-09 11:06:52 PM
Ah, capacitative touchscreen. So you won't really be able to use this thing underwater, but it won't break.

I'm wondering if it's flour proof.

Question.

Is there a 3g or 4g multi touch tablet worth getting that isn't the iPad?

2011-11-10 04:03:53 AM
Actually, I've been thinking lately that if my nook were waterproof, I'd take more baths and finish more books.

But I'm not gonna buy another device anytime soon to make that a reality.

Some people find reading books, watching movies and listening to music relaxing.

Some people take hot soaks to relieve pain in sore muscles and want something to keep their mind occupied while doing that.

It's a brave new world.
