So Vaccines cause increases in the number of neurons in the brain?

bigger? no. better? yeah...if only in the memory and attention areas. i've got sexual fantasy down pretty good...when i can remember it.

It's astonishing that the offspring of Jenny McCarthy can have too much brain.

That means that whatever goes wrong in autism starts in utero, which should help focus researchers looking for its causes or triggers, including specific genes or prenatal exposures.

Hahahahahahahahahaha... Fark you McCarthy.

Oh, like Science or logic will shut these idiots up.

It's easier and probably more comforting to believe that some outside force farked your kid up than to believe it was just defective from the beginning.

It certainly explains the "Rain man" -like savant abilities so many of these kids have. It also explains why they have such a hard time shtting out external stimuli-because their brains have so much more processing power that they don't have to do what "regular" people do, and shut off inputs just to be able to process what they are seeing/hearing etc

Still I expect this will be some comfort to parents of Autistic kids. It's easier somehow to swallow the line "the problem is your kid is TOO smart" than "sorry your kid's brain is sub -par"

Maybe this is why many people with Asperger's seem smarter than those who aren't on the autistic spectrum.

The bigger frontal lobe gives off bad auras and upsets the humors. Need to use ear candles to offset.

Most people with autism do not have any special abilities and are often sub-normal. Excessive numbers of neurons can also be like too many cars on a highway, overloaded and at a standstill.

Speaking from experience with both ends of the spectrum.

2011-11-09 03:27:09 PM
This really isn't news. It's been known for a while that autism is heavily linked to abnormally dense brains. It's nice to see some more confirmation, however.

We've known this for ages. Collapsed layers of neocortex indicate a disorder of neuronal migration. I saw this in brain slices in the nineties.

'more neurons' doesn't explain any of these things. That's like claiming that a heavier processor will make Windows go faster.

Or the wires are crossing. Or the message is getting lost along the way --

I read an article in discover (i think it was discover) about how our brains may very well be at peak performance. Any size increase you could do to the brain would be countered by a fall in efficiency. Your net brain power has a max value and the brain should only be so big as to maintain that max value.

It seems our biology figured out that if its going to make a gigantic brain, it better have a fantastic bang for its buck.

\When did autistic start meaning socially awkward genius? The autistic kids i knew had no extra smarts. In fact the ones who COULD function at all struggled with school and had absolutely no idea of what was going on socially. Its not so much special genius as it is special needs.

The very very small percentage of patients that have savant abilities are charming and allow us to romanticise the disorder.

Plus its attractive to the socially underdeveloped farktards who aren't actually autistic because it makes them feel special on the internet.

In the real world it's a debilitating disorder that causes severe retardation with little to no upside.

I don't think you want more neural growth.

I recall there was a some suggestion that lack of vitamin D caused autism - a study involving increased autism among Somalis who had moved to northern latitudes.

Either way, what's going on inside the head isn't being communicated effectively.

I read an article in discover (i think it was discover) about how our brains may very well be at peak performance. Any size increase you could do to the brain would be countered by a fall in efficiency. Your net brain power has a max value and the brain should only be so big as to maintain that max value.

I read something similar. Larger brain --> longer pathways --> slower response and greater neuron density --> more complex networks --> slower response

Within the happy confines of civilization (such as it is), a slower response time isn't exactly optimal, but it won't get you killed as surely as it would in the wild while being stalked by a predator.

\When did autistic start meaning socially awkward genius? The autistic kids i knew had no extra smarts. In fact the ones who COULD function at all struggled with school and had absolutely no idea of what was going on socially. Its not so much special genius as it is special needs.

Even if there is a correlation between autism spectrum disorders and "low intelligence," generalization is not a good idea. I have been tested multiple times, most recently for vocational rehabilitation, and have been told repeatedly that if I were 40 or so years younger I would be classified as both gifted and learning-disabled. Granted, I may be an unusual case (from 1 in 100,000 or so to off the scale, depending on which frequency rates and correlations you assume among intelligence, autism, and ADD with or without the H), but from my perspective a description of "socially awkward genius" is semantically accurate but at the same time highly misleading.

Vaccination is recommended between birth and 6 months. So, barring time-resistant polio...
