Good on the NCAA for finally getting rid of those offensive racist nicknames. By the way, would you like to buy some Seminoles merchandise?

The FSU nickname is officially endorsed and sanctioned by the actual Seminole Tribe of Florida. Apples and oranges, buddy.

When do we make Notre Dame change? Their local implies that the Irish are short, wear a lot of green, and are prone to violence.

Yet the Fighting Irish with a drunken cartoon leprechaun is totally cool.

If I remember correctly. One of the conditions Englestad wanted when he built the hockey arena was if the UND changed their nickname then they would no longer have use of the arena. Any UND students/alum verify this? Shame if it happens. Probably the most beautiful arena I've ever seen.

And apparently not particularly good at football.

iirc, one out of two of the sioux tribes the school approached approved of the continued use of the name and the logo (the other one didn't hold a vote). and let's be honest the seminoles would have be run out of florida if they hadn't "approved" of the use.

of course it is because the irish are a bunch of drunks that fight a lot.

What are they changing it to?

/I hope it's not the Warriors. Too many schools change it to the warriors. It's a dumb, generic name.

That's a myth, though it's going to cost a boatload to get all the logos out of there.

I can imagine how annoying this must be for NoDak fans, best of luck on the transition.

Might I suggestion the Mighty Flickertails?

I'm personally a fan of state schools naming themselves after the state nickname.

UND Roughriders or UND Flickertails would both be pretty badass possibilities.

First of all I don't appreciate your not so subtle belittling of my people. It's Irish with a capital I, and if I were sober enough to drive I'd come over there and kick your ass.

Well they're in luck:

The settlement agreement also allows the facility to retain imagery "embedded in architecture,"

It looks like the NCAA is going to let them just remove stuff as it wears out. Not mandate a total conversion.

/they should change it to the "Fightin' Whities" or the "Caspers"

I'm still pissed that they changed the Illini logo

also, shouldn't the state have to change it's name from north dakota to north [something not native american]? why should the state allowed to use a tribal name?

It's always seemed surreal to me that a college football stadium is the only context where you can publicly scream "Fark the Irish!!!" at the top of your lungs in a crowd of people and not be charged with a hate crime.

Can anyone explain to me why Oklahoma gets away with calling their team the Sooners? Weren't the Sooners the people that rushed across the border to take Oklahoma back from the Indians? And wasn't Oklahoma the land we promised would be theirs forever after we marched them down the Trail of Tears?

If I were of Indian decent, I bet I'd be pissed about it.

Long story, but here goes:

I am kind of at fault for the whole controversy being brought back up in the mid-1990s. Apparently the nickname discussion was dormant for about 20 years until an "incident" at the UND Homecoming Parade in about 1992 or so. Before the parade started, a fraternity float passed by our high school marching band doing the "Tomahawk Chop", which was popular at the time. Since our band all knew how to play that song (super easy) my fellow trumpet player and I joined in the fun, and in a matter of moments our entire band was blaring it. We didn't realize that there was a Native American tribe float two spots ahead of us until their leader (Chief?) confronted our band director. Turns out the frat boys were mocking the tribe, but we had no idea. It became big news on the local talk radio the following week, and the controversy has been brewing ever since.

/Feel kinda bad
//But I love telling that story to my friends that are Sioux fans.

Change it to the UND Buffalo Farts of the UND Farting Buffalo.

The tomahawk chop is replaced by thousands of fans creating flatulent noises with their arm pits while wearing buffalo helmets.

You'd have thought Eastern Michigan would have been able to do so with the Hurons. There's so much Huron-named stuff in the area (including the Huron River running through Ypsi) that I wouldn't think it would have even been that big of an issue.

As an alum, I'll be sad to see the name go, but kind of glad that this crap is over with. The NCAA was not going to change their tune, and other schools were refusing to play UND if the kept the name.

I can understand making Miami University changing theirs from the Redskins, because that is a pretty obvious racist term, but having to change the name from a tribe that is so prominent in North Dakota history baffles my mind.

They could always change their name to an imaginary bird.

Eastern still sucks for failing to embrace the Emu as their new mascot.

One of these schools needs to double down and rename themselves to "The Easily Defeated Indigenous Peoples" or something of that nature. It's not a tribal name after all.

Since it is an insult to Indians to have a team name called something refering to them, then I propose that the following college teams are put on notice to change their names immediately...

Alcorn State Braves
Alvernia Crusaders
Amherst Lord Jeffs
Appalachian State Mountaineers
Arcadia Knights
Arkansas-Little Rock Trojans
AUM Senators
Augustana (IL) Vikings
Augustana (SD) Vikings
Austin Peay Governors
Ave Maria University Gyrenes

This is just the A's...

I personally think this is ridiculous. It's not like they are making fun of any race/creed... they want to be like them! Indians are known to be brave ferocious and fight to the end. I know.. lets call ourselves a Boll Weevil. (Arkansas-Monticello Boll Weevils and Cotton Blossoms).

It's just crazy that the NCAA is squawndering their resources on this. They have a small poxet to begin with.

I'm glad the NCAA has solved all their problems and can focus on this.

Seriously, Congress should have passed a law prohibiting them from going after "offensive" nicknames and logos until there was a football playoff in place.
