In the effort to merge the two Princetons

One, two Princetons kneel before you
That's what I said, now
Princetons, Princetons who adore you
Just go ahead, now

Not to be confused, of course, with Princeton Junction (which is actually in West Windsor)

Well as a former Borough cop, this is something that needed to be done. Maintaining two of everything was financially draining...

The Princetons are one of 22 New Jersey "doughnut towns" where one town completely surrounds another.

I grew up in one of those doughnut holes (Medford Lakes), and used to live just across US 1 from Princeton (in Plainsboro), so I'm getting a kick out of this article.

Agreed. I've been in the Boro for 16 years and I've never heard a convincing arguement for the separation. It always seemed to boil down to Boro residents wanting to feel superior to Twp residents for (insert inane reason), and Twp residents feeling superior to Boro residents for (insert equally inane reason).

Then again... I can walk to Haven and Halo Pub from my house, so I guess that does make me better than most Twp folks ;)

Ah, the doughnut town, another reason why New Jersey needs it's own FARK tag.

It just makes sense to consolidate to cut down on expenses, but the folks who are in these jobs that will be eliminated will have to be dragged from their posts kicking and screaming.

greenlady1: I grew up in northern NJ, and my grandparents lived in Mendham Boro for 35 years, so getting a kick. Seriously, I never understood why so many towns were separated like that.

I grew up in a one square mile "Township" in Bergen County. NJ has more municipalities than California. Most of these Podunk towns were created 100 years ago when the state was gripped by a phenomenon known as Boroughitis (new window) These towns were created to provide gov jobs on the basis of nepotism and political patronage. NJ cops and teachers receive some of the best compensation packages in the USA. Actually NJ cops are the best paid in the entire country. See here: Link (new window) For this reason NJ has the highest property tax rates in the US.

I'm hoping that the recent Princeton merger will set a trend in NJ and we can get rid of these one-square-mile-wonders. I'm not holding out a lot of hope. Most of these municipal workers making $150K per year would be hard pressed to duplicate their salaries out in the private sector. They'll put up a bloody fight before they allow this to happen.

The problem is it would have to be an 'Megalopolis' tag, since a continuous strip from Baltimore to Boston has these same issues.

/Not including Washington DC because they have Congress making an extra-special brand of stupid there

Worth noting is that unlike any other state (except possibly Delaware and Connecticut), there's no "unincorporated territory" in New Jersey. No matter where you are in the state, you're always in some specific town/borough/township/city/village.

Bergen County alone has about 70 towns. One of them is in three pieces, and another has a double-digit population.

2011-11-09 06:36:48 PM
Fun fact: Princeton, NJ (both of them I guess) and Princeton, WV are both in Mercer County. Well, *A* Mercer County. Because there are two. In two different states. Ahem.

And Plainsboro (which borders Princeton Twp) is in Middlesex County. And "Middlesex County" is more fun to say than "Mercer County".

The borders of Berlin Borough and Berlin Township were drawn to maximize the numbers of Republicans in the borough and Democrats in the township. Tavistock and Pine Valley are essentially golf courses plus a few houses, incorporated as boroughs to escape the tyranny of local blue laws or booze laws. It's impossible to drive from some neighborhoods in Pennsauken to other parts of the township without crossing into another municipality; same goes for a couple of apartment complexes in Maple Shade. Yes, it's a fun state.
