Well we had to keep that 2/3 failure rate on Mars missions up somehow...

Yeah...i tend to imagine the space program IT team is like my companies.

Me: "Ummm, IT? Yeah, my computer is on fire"

Don't believe the lies. The asteroid that passed last night was actually an alien spaceship. It shot the probe before it could leave orbit. Mars is hiding something... It didn't want its moons probed.

Is the probe plugged in sir or madam? You will have to reinstall Windows. Call back when that is finished.

Seriously, this is really too bad, it was going to be a great mission. They only had a short window to get underway from Earth orbit too, so unless they can fix it quickly the mission is toast. I wonder if any thought was given to a backup mission if they can get it started on a later date; probe an asteroid or something.

They should have sent Phobos-Apollo

C'mon now, stuff keeps failing out! Ends up in orbit! They're building a secret orbital base and you people are falling for it!

Send up Tommy Lee Jones, Clint Eastwood, and Ben Affleck to fix it.

Leave Ben Affleck with the probe - just in case.

pxsteel: I am so glad we have to rely on these guys to get our astronauts around. Brilliant stroke of genius by the Obama administration.

Everyone has had plenty of Mars mission failure to go around. The US lost Mars polar lander, Mars climate explorer, the ESA lost their first mission Beagle. The Russians lost their previous Phobos missions too as I recall. Plenty of failure to go around on a hard point to make, although the Russians currently have quite a low batting average with Mars.

Did anybody RTFA? It is still in orbit, and it still has all its fuel. If the problem is a software issue and not a hardware issue, they still have a chance.

Article says 3 days till the batteries run out and it becomes a piece of space junk of orbit.
/I hope they make it. Every mission that succeeds brings back so much info.

It's a good thing we have a strong domestic manned space program for our astronauts to use and won't be relying on Russian rockets to take them to the ISS. Oh, wait...

This sucks, I had hopes that Russia would get back into the space exploration game but it looks like not so much. After all, they haven't put anything beyond low earth orbit since 1988! So it would of been worth noting if they had done so with this mission, back to the drawing board.

I am pretty sure they're 0/16. On the other hand the Soyuz rocket is the most reliable in the world.

Huh, no mention of the 7 tons of N2O4 and hydrazine on board that might end up back on Earf in about a month.

This is a much bigger problem than most of the older, empty failed satellites of late.

Eh, the Soyuz is pretty much reliable but lets hope the next Soyuz launch on the 13th goes a bit better. Granted, Russia did launch the last Progress spacecraft without it failing so its possible that it'll just be fine.

2011-11-09 12:42:58 PM
Actually not a bad result for the Russians. They have had a long list of spacecraft that failed to even achieve Earth orbit.
