Let's not get too insane about this. The Hawks won an NBA championship and the Celtics probably win a bunch without Russell, anyway. This is like saying Hakeem Olajuwon was a bust because Michael Jordan was taken two picks later.

The difference is Auerbach didn't have the scouting system that exists today, or even when Jordan/Olajuwon were drafted. He did it all himself - the only reason he drafted Russell was because trusted colleague(Bill Reinhart) told him Russell was the piece he needed. So he drafted Bill Russell sight unseen No videotape, no scouting trips.

This was the trade:

To Rochester(now Sacramento): The Ice Capades. That's it.

To St. Louis Hawks(now Atlanta): Ed Macauley and Cliff Hagan(after the GM called Red back and harangued him for Hagan to complete the deal)

He gave up two players to draft someone he'd never seen play, because another coach told him "you need this guy". If the Celtics don't get Russell, they likely don't become the dynasty they did; they might not have won any at all in the 50's and 60's. With Macauley and Hagan they had the same defensive deficiency they had had for several years: They couldn't consistently rebound the ball. Russell changed that.

Auerbach himself considered this trade the best he ever made.

Came here to say that. I guess Joe Pesci finally got him.

Bill Russell doesn't get the respect he deserves. Will we ever see someone in any of the major sports approach two college championships, a gold medal as captain of the Olympic team, and eleven pro championships?

He does in Boston/New England.
