Battery life: 32.8 seconds.

unlikely: Battery life: 32.8 seconds.

um, about that......"As for Nvidia's chip, the company claims it will offer three times the graphic performance while offering 61 percent more battery life - meaning up to 12 hours of HD video playback on a single charge." and "Although touted as a quad-core processor, the chip also includes a fifth processing core that can be used in place of the four main cores to run devices in a lower power state."

Anandtech had an interesting article about it a while back. Seems to be a pretty neat design. When only background stuff is being done (checking email, updating widgets) the fifth core is used. And if I remember correctly it can selectively activate the cores as needed. Considering the thing is still made on a 40nm fab, the optimization will be badly needed.

If you're running all four cores on a 40nm fab though.....yea expect the battery to tank.

Sure. I believe that. Like when the people sell you an "eight hour" laptop battery.

sammyk: Although touted as a quad-core processor, the chip also includes a fifth processing core that can be used in place of the four main cores to run devices in a lower power state.

Again, not buying it. Modern phones have had power control that took most of the components to a completely off state until they were called on to operate for like eight years. That technology isn't new, and I will remain a steadfast skeptic of its battery life until I hear from a normal everyday user that they actually get that life out of it.

This will have more cores than my gaming laptop. (although, cores alone do not a gaming laptop make).

pretty cool. I really like ASUS. If I am a techno-fan-boy of any one company/product, it would be ASUS. If they made a phone, I might take a look at it and consider stepping up to the world of smartphones. However, currently, the smartphones out there don't really catch my interest. I'll stick to my LG phone, the same model that was accused of exploding a chinese man's heart.

/ however, ASUS's customer service is not very communicative. My wife spilled wine all over my laptop (by accident), I sent it in under warranty. I never heard from anyone about anything and could never get anyone on the phone to help me... but, I got my laptop back in 4-7 days totally fixed. I was just extremely nervous because no one would talk to me. Other than that, the warranty service was exactly as advertised. Free, fast and effective.

When I was a kid I had an uncle who came to live with us when he was "down on his luck". I can remember late at night he would come into my bedroom when I was asleep and pull aside my blankets. At first he would just look at my and I would lay there pretending to be asleep. But after a few days these nocturnal visitations would progress to touching. I would press my eyes tight shut and just wait for it to end. But it never ended, it just got worse and worse. Then it was his heavy body on top of me, crushing the breath right out of my lungs. The smell of whiskey and cigarettes on his breath stinging my nostrils and my eyes pressed so tightly shut the tears strained to escape. The gutteral sounds of his grunts and heavy pants. The feel of his rough calloused hands stroking my hair. The sick, falling feeling in my stomach as he told me "you're pretty, you're so pretty". The overwhelming feeling of being filthy and worthless as he'd leave me room and tell me "remember, this is 'our little secret'". God, how I hated that with ever ounce of my being.Everything, him, me, everything.

But other than that, yeah, I really hate that "my battery is about to run o..." meme.

I absolutely LOVE my Asus Transformer tablet... when it works, which right now it does not. For the second time I've got some kind of video card problem.

The screen lights up, but the image is all corrupted and weird. It seems like the video card or video controller or something is loose or broken. Sent it in to Asus once (their customer service was pretty awesome... 6 minute phone call, most of which was getting through the phone tree and then, "Yeah, that does sound like a problem. Send it right in."). When they returned it the screen was working fine again, but the note in the box said something along the lines of "tested, functioning properly, no problems, returning". I simply assumed that meant that they'd fixed the problem and then a final inspection cleared it.

I've got to call them and send it in again now, I just procrastinated today.

I can safely say the Galaxy Nexus and Rezound will both beat the hell out of the RAZR or Droid 3 (becaue Moto Blur sucks).

Galaxy Nexus will be totally stock, and pretty fast. But the hardware in that is lower than that in the Rezound. The Rezound will be dual 1.5Ghz and have the added benefit of HTC Sense.

I know manufacturer add-ins are a pretty divisive topic, but Sense is just so damn pretty. They really add a great deal to the phone, as well, with better e-mail apps and widgets widgets and a ton of other stuff. On the other hand Moto Blur doesn't really add anything useful or good over AOSP while bloating it. It doesn't even pretty it up enough that it's worth considering. Samsung on the other hand has Touchwiz, which adds only a little, but also doesn't bloat too much. Not that that's applicable to the stock Nexus. And AOSP itself makes a lot of people happy, but it's not pretty at all. It's incredibly bland. If you're fine with bland, either choice will make you happier than a Motorola. Get yourself Swype or SlideIT, and after a few weeks you'll wonder why you ever wanted a physical keyboard to begin with.

I am going from the Incredible to the Rezound. That should last me awhile.

I can't speak for the D3, but I thought the RAZR was using a similar form of UI to the Bionic - so it's not exactly MotoBlur, but it's not as clean as the Photon or X2's UI.

The chip is designed specifically for android. Also, the switching between cores is handled by hardware and is designed to be completely transparent to the OS. So the chances are extremely good that it will enter the low power state for a significant amount of time.

I would expect that if the phone is just in standby, with no internets or GPS, etc running, that the battery would drain at the same rate. Your analogy is farkcical.

If I have a majestic mansion with lots and lots of wonderful eletronic toys, but only one lamp is turned on, I would expect the power consumption to be the same as if I had that same lamp plugged in in a one room hovel.

dustlesswalnut: Why so many tablets? What do you use them for?

R&D. I'm an IT consultant/manager. No better way to understand how technology works than to work with technology. Kick the tires, drink the potion, etc. So when peole ask me about tablets, I can speak very knowledgeably and compare/contrast the upsides and downsides of the various mobile platforms when it come to ACTUALLY DOING WORK on them :) For instance, why can;t you mark an e-mail urgent on an iPad? How do you STOP your Touchpad from answering your Pre? which RDP clients are best on which platforms? Which Word editors, and why? It's the little gotchas that no review or marketing material will ever tell you. (I also have a Cruze and an Android rooted Nook. Plus 4-5 netbooks)

dustlesswalnut: I had a transformer for 4 days and couldn't find a use for it that my phone didn't do better.

Yeah. for a LOT of people, Tablets are a solution to a problem no one is having.

They are WAY over-hyped in terms of actual usefulness, especially in a business context. They are great for certain specific purposes, but there is one thing I always tell people asking about tablets: They do not do ANY particular thing that another device doesn't already do better. TV is better for movies, eReaders are better for books, smartphones are better for quick e-mail/texting, netbooks are better for mobile content creation, etc. etc.

But what a tablet DOES do well is a lot of particular things reasonably well on one device.

In my case, I like checking and responding to e-mail with the larger screen, (especially when there are attachments), I like reading the news of the day as I'm getting ready for work, I like e-books with the larger screen, I like being able to watch a movie while my wife sleeps. I like browsing the internet on the toilet, I like the games, I like having a day's worth of battery life. etc. (Notice not many of these are 'work related'?)

Mostly, for what I used to use a netbook, it does the same things, but it's INSTANT on, lighter weight and lasts longer.

But I see a lot of people get tablets because they are this amazing new way of doing things, only to realize within a week or two that they don't have much real use for it.

You do realize you are on the "Geek" section of Fark, right?

BojanglesPaladin: In my case, I like checking and responding to e-mail with the larger screen, (especially when there are attachments), I like reading the news of the day as I'm getting ready for work, I like e-books with the larger screen, I like being able to watch a movie while my wife sleeps. I like browsing the internet on the toilet, I like the games, I like having a day's worth of battery life. etc. (Notice not many of these are 'work related'?)

Mostly, for what I used to use a netbook, it does the same things, but it's INSTANT on, lighter weight and lasts longer.

Take away the "larger screen" aspect, and you've described my phone. It's a Thunderbolt, so maybe I don't desire a tablet because I'm already using a pretty big screen.

My wife has a Galaxy 10.1 that she uses to read PDF medical textbooks. That's the only real function I see it doing better than anything else, and I still think that $500 was too much to spend for that ability.
