TFA: "The general view out here is we get storms like this on a fairly regular basis," Johnson said. "We kind of shrug it off. But when the National Weather Service is trying to sound an alarm with 30-foot seas and this is a rare storm, take it seriously. I think they're taking it seriously with a grain of salt."

Anyone care to translate this from Alaskan?

Vladimir Putin picked me up at 7:00 p.m. in a black Escalade and regaled me with stories of the Cold War as we sped through an underground tunnel in Moscow. In seemingly no time, we were at his palatial mansion on the Baltic Sea. He prepared me dinner, shirtless. I was so hungry. He had set out dozens of platters. After hours of cooking he emerged with a single plate of tapas: tiny sea scallops, perfectly seared. They must have been some kind of exotic scallop because they were purple. He stared into my eyes. It was getting uncomfortable.

It was then that I noticed there was a wedding taking place out on the beach. When I asked him about it, he said that he allowed weddings on his property to offset the costs of upkeep.

The Russians have HAARP, too. Over there it's known as SURA. And former Defense Secretary William Cohen had this to say ...

"Others [terrorists] are engaging even in an eco-type of terrorism whereby they can alter the climate, set off earthquakes, volcanoes remotely through the use of electromagnetic waves... So there are plenty of ingenious minds out there that are at work finding ways in which they can wreak terror upon other nations...It's real, and that's the reason why we have to intensify our [counterterrorism] efforts."
Secretary of Defense William Cohen at an April 1997 counterterrorism conference sponsored by former Senator Sam Nunn.

Quoted from DoD News Briefing, Secretary of Defense William S. Cohen, Q&A at the Conference on Terrorism, Weapons of Mass Destruction, and U.S. Strategy, University of Georgia, Athens, Apr. 28, 1997.

But then, it could just be "weather". (shrugs)

"They already had the beard, we had to work on the mustache. There was a facial hair gap!"

/The Mustache, a secret weapon designed by the government to make up for the facial hair gap (the Russians had already been working on The Russian Beard.

The Mustache is being pursued by Jim Rage and the ladies of Project: Shave, Kitty Sangata (Ninjitsu, Demolitions, Electrolysis), Holly go Lovely (Kung Fu, Demolitions, she devil with a comb) and Crystal (Liberal Arts, Demolitions, red hot with a hair dryer). Of course, their funding had been cut in 1986 and Shave didn't really even exist anymore

Well, it's true that Alaska is known for weather that would make those if us here in the CONUS cower with fear, this looks like it's going a bit beyond the usual anyway. Keep in mind that Nome, Population 3,600 also has the biggest hospital in western Alaska, but no road with which to evacuate. They barge supplies up there, or fly 'em in - well, except for that Diptheria Serum for which they are so justly famous.

I'm trying to imagine the windchill at say, minus 20 degrees F and 100 MPH wind. If the ground was icy could you even keep your feet? I imagine that if you have outbuildings you run fixed ropes between 'em so you don't get lost in that kind of storm.

I've been in calm weather at -40 degrees F. Can't imagine a blow like that one and what it would be like.

/Good luck to 'em all
//Hunker down and keep warm people.

It's Alaska. We're used to snow.

"We kind of shrug it off.

We have big trucks and guns and shiat. We can handle it.

But when the National Weather Service is trying to sound an alarm with 30-foot seas and this is a rare storm, take it seriously.

This storm may be worse than usual.

I think they're taking it seriously with a grain of salt.

National Weather Service. Sounds like government. Can't trust government. Don't trust storm either. Head asplode.

Why so surprised? Western Alaska is not a place where you live if you have a choice in the matter. Some places are nice to visit, but live there? No thanks. Population density is down to many square miles per person, you can at times be 200 miles from the nearest person, and it's all 500 miles from the nearest road. You folks down in the lower 48 don't know what living in the sticks means.
