$7-9 a pack? Is that what it really costs these days? Damn, last time I bought a pack it was like $3.00. Even at a pack a week like I used to do that would add up.

My father was killed by cigarettes. He worked for decades at the RJR cigarette factory (Winston), and he smoked a pack every day. One day he didn't come home from work. We got a call instead from the factory manager that he had died at work.

A friend of mine took the former option. Another friend of mine only smoked for part of the year. She would quit with the full intention of starting up again in a few months, start up again and smoke for a few months, quit with the intention of starting up again, wash, rinse, repeat.

You sound not-cool.

Your father died because he was human. Could cigarettes have been a contributing factor? Of course! Do you know what would have happened if he never smoked? No.

Also from the sound of it, cigarettes provided everything you ever had that came from your dad. You should thank RJReynolds for the roof over your head and the food on your table when you were a kid.

I found the best way to quit was not gimmicks or patches or whatever.. it was simply deciding that I was stronger than the urge to have a smoke. I quit a pack a day habit cold turkey and never went back.

Similar for me, though I went cold-turkey for a year before I started allowing myself one here and there. In the three years since I quit, I've smoked about a pack and a half. If I get through the rest of my life on 15 cigs a year, I'll be happy.

Smokes were about 8 bucks a carton when I started. 25 years later, they were pushing $30 at indian smokeshops and were considerably more on the street. For most of that 25 years, I smoked 2 packs of bare-ass Lucky Strikes a day (filters are for girls and gays). I quit in 1999 because I was told by a Phillip Morris executive that in tobacco states a pack of smokes is worth about a nickel at the factory door. By the time it gets to a store on the other side of the country, the price difference is all middlemen and government taxes. I decided to quit giving my money away to those assholes.

I figure the money I saved over the next decade paid for the Las Vegas condo I bought in 2009.

To all the heroic "I'll never quit" people - Have fun with your $9+ a day habit, suckers.

I love smoking. Maybe I'll quit some day, if I feel like it. I'm afraid all the whining and self righteousness of non smokers acts like a motivator to keep smoking, though. A smoke is nice, but a smoke that pisses off some whiner who just want to make you do what they want is wonderful.

Nib: Or say fark the taxes and buy from cigoutlet.net.

Which is why I mentioned the the cigarette machines and such. The machine I have cost $7,the tubes are $1.50 for 200 tubes and the tobacco is $12.50 for a 1lb bag of nice tobacco. I can make 2-3 cartons of cigarettes from that one bag.

/Still would be better off quitting though.

I buy whole leaf tobacco for $10 a kilo and process it myself. That's $40 a year for a product that's better than anything you can buy in a store. I spend an additional $20-30 a year on papers, and my biggest expense is importing Swan extra slim filters from the UK, which runs me about $80 a year, postage included. And those aren't a necessity, as I smoked Lucky Strikes before I decided to be cooler than you.

Mofo_Jones: I don't smoke, much less like a chimney. Can I have $3,300?

Sure! Take a sealed box and put it on your dresser. Put $9 in the box every day. This time next year, open the box. Tadaa! (or, you know, just leave it in the bank and let interest accrue...)
