How about TV and radio, and in magazines, and movies, and at ball games... and on buses and milk cartons and t-shirts, and bananas and written on the sky?

I'm shocked. Shocked I tell you!

StealthStalker: Why not?

Because nothing has EVER gone wrong with governments being run as corporate spending venues.

Well, they could have people pay TAXES instead...nah, that's crazy talk. Better we have ads on every square inch of everything.

Makes sense. How else are they going to pay all those ridiculous pensions they are on the hook for?

I'm weird, I like advertising....mostly because I understand that products and services aren't free, so someone's footing the bill. I could A: Pay for things out of my (empty) pocket, or B: Have some ads to provide things for me. Like the Dalek Money Bank ad to the right of miy screen right now, and Scribol, and KTLA5 Loss Angeles and other stuff providing me this wonderful FARK experience for $0.00 out of my pocket. Go Ads!

What happened to the idea of a huge orbiting ad satellite the (virtual) size of the moon?

They could put ads on the sidewalks, streets, runways, police uniforms, parking ticket...what an awesome idea.

Wouldn't it be easier to just spend like sane adults, prioritize, and stick to your budget ?

They could even put 'em on homeless people...

The former Duchy of Daley (the Earldom of Emmanuel has a better ring to it, dontcha think?) certainly can't consider any cutbacks. The broad river of bribery and graft must flow, and so revenue must be found to bolster it. If Cook Co. could find some way to tax those of us downstate (on top of the pyramid of taxes they already add to the bill when we go up to spend our money), they would do it in an instant.

Just another instance of "If it's growing, it's working; if it's not, it's decaying."

If only we could sell off the rights to our parking meters for 75 years to get some big bucks.
What? We already did? Oh. Well where is the money? It was spent within ONE year? Oh.
Uh... WE ARE SCREWED.

Cook County has one of the highest sales tax rates in America.
I agree with what you are saying that the well-to-do need to pick up some slack and the last thing we need is more advertisements in our face, but the way you said it... is a bit misinformed.

You're welcome to your opinion, but the actual fact is that they don't have enough tax revenue to avoid selling the advertising. Therefore, tax revenue is insufficient, no matter the current rates (ignoring the fact that there are other taxes than the sales tax).

It's really pretty simple.

just like federal taxes. a majority of the taxes received in cook county go towards cities in illinois that do not produce a lot of tax revenue. i think we have somewhat the same opinion, but it's not as simple as you think.

Clearly you're not up on the taxes they currently pay... and the already inflated fees as well as fines, etc... they're going to increase massively across the board as part of this revenue plan.

My 'revenue stream' is insufficient to sustain my desired spending level as well.
In the absense of the ability to hold my revenue generation source (employer.. ) hostage using the "I'll charge whatever the fark I want for my services and you'll just have no choice to pay it " strategy...
I have to adjust my spending, while at the same time looking for ways to legitemately increase my 'revenue stream'... (earn more money... )
I think this was his point. The taxes and fees and fees ON fees in Chicago is rediculous.
And your knee-jerk and decidedly simplistic democratic reaction of simply 'tax more'...
was dumb.

Many years ago just prior to an election the sitting mayor, Pete Flaherty, put a sign on every city trash receptacle which read "For Pete's sake keep Pittsburgh clean". His opponent claimed it was political advertising and forced their removal.

You can extend this argument to anything. "...to avoid charging for public transportation." "...to avoid sticking a fee on marriage licenses." "...to avoid enforcing parking ordinances."

Sometimes, if you're in over your head. the household isn't amenable to cutting anything, and the primary earner's boss won't give him a raise, somebody in the household has to go get a side job.

Putting aside that, here, the spouse who won't accept any budget cuts is also the boss who won't give the breadwinner a raise, this seems like a sensible proposal to put nearly 5,000 inanimate objects to work.

/ In fact, this is less like a side job, and more like running a CafePress store on the side so that a small check rolls in every few months.

What's wrong with a city selling ad space on the side of everything it owns*? Did you biatch when they started doing it to buses?

*historic buildings excepted

/I think the Treasury should print ads on paper money
//it would beat the "in god we trust" crap we have now

So they've exhausted the revenue stream from having toll booths ever 200 yards on every major road?

I was surprised there wasn't a toll on the way to the bathroom in the hotel.

This thread is a perfect example of how politicians exploit the credulity and stupidity of the populace in order to fleece them.

"We're from the government and we're here to help" is a threat.

Actually it's not. Now I say this as a good liberal, but there are too many taxing authorities in the greater metro Chicago area. We get taxes paid to the City, the County, the State, the Townships, the Pier Authority, the Water Reclamation Districts. There are more units of government in Illinois than in any other state. Eliminate some of those units, get rid of the duplicated services like the reception, backoffice, IT, HR, that you need to make any office run. You can keep taxes where they are and increase spending on delivering services.

Emanuel's garbage truck thing is a good first step.

So, if the people in charge of the tax revenue are irresponsible with said revenue and need more money to waste then we should punish the people and make them pay even more taxes?

They are also imposing a $1,200 per day fine if you have weeds higher than 12" (true story)
