Anyone else flash on the "Surfer" from Lucifer's Hammer?

2011-11-08 08:06:06 PM
All he needs are some cool buds, some tasty waves and he's fine.

2011-11-08 08:21:35 PM
He's not coming back...

Horrible editing, would have liked to see the entire ride from the helicopter's angle

That... a 90 foot wave is not really a 90 foot wave if you're viewing it from an angle that only shows 5 feet.

Yeah he looks pretty wet to me, though. Guess the joke's on him!

Like flyfishing, if you're thinking about it you can't do it.

Just be.

1:40-ish... damn, it's good to be a human.

That wasn't what I was expecting.. That video was all sorts of "meh"

"sometimes there are very big waves." Fri'it said, thoughtfully. "Nothing would stop them. But if you ride them, you do not drown...the trick is to judge the strength of the wave."

Drunah caught the glint in his eye.

"Ah. How wonderful of the Great Om to put such instructive examples in our path... and what happens to the ones who cannot {ride it}?"

"They drown. Often. Some of the waves are very big."

"Such is often the nature of waves, I understand."

Yes, someone needs to tell the idiot behind the production board to just lay off the controls.

You know, a lot of people expected maybe Mark "Cutback" Davis or Bob "Jungle Death" Gerrard would take the honors this year.

Meh, the life vest kinda negates the ginormous gonad remark.

As if everyone hasn't surfed a 90ft wave at some point in their lives. This just happened to get caught on video.

Whenever someone rolls their eyes at the word 'documentary' and says they're boring, I tell them about this one.

I still don't understand why surfing requires huge gonads. I mean, you fall into water when you fall -- that's a pretty good landing by most counts. Now, if they were surfing on lava or acid, I'd not argue their courage (or stupidity). But really ... water?!?

2011-11-09 09:35:27 AM
Huh. Surprisingly dull.

2011-11-09 09:53:18 AM
I would have been peeing my pants. Sort of redundant though.

I have not surfed now for about fifteen years, but I have a good memory. I suggest you get a board and go out. You will look at life differently, more clearly. And your horribly ignorant statements on the internet will become distant memories.

You're welcome.

Anyone else disappointed that they didn't include the theme from Hawaii 5-0?

Surfing can kill you. In your sleep. At home. With a wooden spoon.

That's why this is gnarly.

OK, I'll bite. How many times in your surfing days did you almost die or get horribly maimed? I do believe surfing requires an impressive level of skill (much like golf or juggling) -- but having looked up the most common injuries, it appears as though hitting your own board (not the water) is the biggest issue. A little research also shows that Cheerleading is one of the most dangerous, injury-causing sports in existence.

I guess it's more about how manly you feel versus the reality. Maybe we should all be talking about the huge balls on those cheerleaders rather than the guy that falls into the cushioning water.

The danger in surfing is not hitting the water, it's being held under the water, and/or hitting the surface immediately under the water (which can be coral, or coincidentally the lava rock you were using as a ridiculous example). Did you really need someone to tell you that the biggest threat in an ocean-based sport might be drowning?

Then get your cheerleader self on a board and hit the soft, pillowy waves, buddy.

It's been about three life times since I surfed as a kid in Southern California. The biggest wave I ever rode was about 6ft. Ii didn't look that big when I took off and when I saw what I had gotten into, I just about sh*t a big one. I was used to 3-4 ft waves. What people who have never surfed do not grasp is the level of force that waves carry. I would never even consider the notion of big wave surfing. You have to have giant balls, way above average skill and you must be in top physical condition. I was none of the above, but small wave surfing was a lot of fun. It was really all about the beach and the girls....oh did I mention the girls were beyond belief and while many other sports attract beautiful girls, the beach is where they wear the least. Great sport.
