"being-looked-at-ness" is now considered posh enough to utilize in normal discourse?

It's 11:59 on Radio Free America; this is Uncle Sam, with music, and the truth until dawn. Right now I've got a few words for some of our brothers and sisters in the occupied zone: The bearded woman shaves. The barista has a wide shade to cover her single eye. The woman uses a scarf to cover up her neck ears.

"I didn't consciously classify them as freaks, but those who resort to ridiculing others on the basis of difference certainly have their own emotional issues to contend with."

This.

So, instead of interviewing real people and then writing their stories, she read a couple of books, and then made up her own stories to reinforce the feelings she had while reading stories written about real people. I guess she couldn't be bothered with actually telling true stories--hers are going to be 'truer' in the sense that she can 'feel' their emotions. Riight.

I think Tim O'Brien would agree that the truest stories aren't necessarily based in fact. I don't know about her stories in particular, but in theory.

If your agenda is about "being-looked-at-ness", then I have a reasonable expectation that you will discuss the lives, feelings and attitudes of such "others". Instead she has created victims, given them whatever is needed to make her point, and gone from there. It would be much more interesting to know how a real 'bearded lady' experiences the world instead of someone telling us how she thinks the woman should feel.
