I think Tim O'Brien would agree that the truest stories aren't necessarily based in fact. I don't know about her stories in particular, but in theory.

If your agenda is about "being-looked-at-ness", then I have a reasonable expectation that you will discuss the lives, feelings and attitudes of such "others". Instead she has created victims, given them whatever is needed to make her point, and gone from there. It would be much more interesting to know how a real 'bearded lady' experiences the world instead of someone telling us how she thinks the woman should feel.
