Although the age of consent in Louisiana is 17 years old, Slidell Police told WWL First News that it is legal for 16-year-olds to marry if the child's parents give their consent. Police say they checked the validity of the marriage and found that the 16-year-old in this case is legally married.

In other words, statutory rape is OK as long as the parents of the minor give their blessing.

Nice family values Louisiana.

FTA...According to the police, 17-year-old Ellis DarDar (left), 20-year-old Marc Kuchler and Kuchler's teenage wife hatched the plan to rob the Quick Check at 1414 Fremaux Ave. while dining at Ryan's Restaurant on Monday

I appreciate a nice round of Louisiana-bashing as much as the next guy, but I'm pretty sure it's law in every state, or damn near every state at least, that (1) minors who are teenagers (i.e., not little kids, but minors over a certain age, such as 14 or 15 or whatever) can get married if their parents give their consent to the marriage, and (2) the crime of statutory rape is defined as sexual relations with a minor who is not the spouse of the perpetrator. I'm pretty sure that Louisana's laws on this issue are not noticeably different from your state's or my state's.

This is correct, here in New Mexico this has been law since at least the early 70s, it was how my parents were married.

I still feel that doesn't make it right, in any state. They're too young to get married, and if they do, that's a sign of something wrong, not something that should be legal.

So if a 16 year old becomes pregnant there are people that suggest she should be legally prohibited from marrying the father of the child? That doesn't seem the right way to approach it either. There's nothing magical about 18. We allow people to drive cars at 16. We allow them to drink at 21. There's no reason we have to make every adult thing on Earth legal on the exact same day.

2011-11-08 09:57:32 PM
Wait, let me see if I've got this right...

Man wanted to distract cashier, sent his 16 year-old wife into the store dressed in shorts & low-cut top to distract cashier, fictional and mildly racist character was supposed to bum rush the register when the cashier was distracted, but fictional and mildly racist character instead ran away and cowered in a corner until the police found him, where he confessed to everything. Police check marriage papers and discover that the 16 year-old who was supposed to distract the cashier was legally married to her 20 year-old husband.

So, what exactly did they do that was illegal? And goddammit, was the cashier distracted or not???

I came to say "Dar Dar Binks"?

My sister was married when she was 16, back in 1973. Not pregnant, just in love. She then had a couple of kids, an affair, and a divorce. Then boyfriends, one more kid, worked in restaurants. After that she went to university to become a lawyer. This was in Australia about 20 years ago, so not only was the schooling free, but she was paid a stipend to attend. Last I heard (10 or so years ago) she was making $250K a year and traveling the world for whatever firm she worked for. Yeah, I don't have a close family.
So, don't knock everyone that gets married young, don't knock socialism either.
I'm the second-most loser of the family (4 professional girls, one laborer boy), and I'm not the boy.

2011-11-08 10:00:03 PM
If you don't let your girls marry at 15 or 16, babby will be formed without wedded parents and that's just not right. You get yerself a shotgun and resolve that real quick.

Ahem.

In any case the fact is using a woman to distract the cashier/LP folks/attendants happens in EVERY retail industry. All of them. Everywhere.

So much so that they train retail shmucks to watch for that sort of thing.

What's really hilarious when someone tries pulling it and the retail attendant happens to be gay. Suddenly their plan fails miserably, and they get busted.

This happened to a gay friend of mine and he said, "Stupid biatch shoulda used her cute boyfriend, might have gotten away with it." Hilarious.

/Petty criminals are petty.

If it's meant to be, then the father will still be around to marry in 2 years when the girl reaches majority. It's an antiquated notion that the parents HAVE to be married at the time of birth.

And if it doesn't work out, they save themselves and their child/children a nasty divorce.
