"The Chinese government can stop it," said Sen. John McCain of Arizona, the top Republican on the panel.

The American government can stop it too, dick. Stop cutting PO's to known counterfeiters.

There is absolutely no reason the government should be purchasing anything that isn't made in this country.

Maybe it's not a good idea to buy weapons, or parts for weapons, from enemies.

I thought big corporations were the ones farming their jobs off shore for cheaper labor leading to job shortages here? At least the people in sweat-shops making iPhones and Nikes don't have the potential to disrupt the American military complex. But hey, it is only China. There are no historical records showing they believe themselves to be fated by a mandate from heaven to rule the world, even if they have to wait many, many, many years.

Especially sensitive defense-related items. Heck, I wouldn't purchase bullets made from other countries. The government should be supporting home-based businesses, even if that's defense-related businesses, which I personally abhor supporting.

Cool! Now when the US sells off its surplus missiles to third-world countries and they get made into IEDs there is a good chance they wont explode -- thereby saving American Troop's lives. The DOD is always thinking about their soldiers first.

Then instead of $500 toilet seats, you're going to have $1000 1GB SDRAM modules.

It would be better to team up with Canada and the UK and pool resources for a few trusted chip fabs. If you have a few of them, it'll help keep the price down.

A lot of times the dirty contractors will subcontract out parts to China and not tell anyone. Guess what, dirty contractor, you just got fined, and might see the inside of a cell. I've known of contractors who have gone to prison for things like that. As ineffectual as the government is sometimes, it doesn't like for China to have technical drawings of weapon parts.

THIS. Or better yet, admit that buying anything from China carries an unacceptable level of risk and just stop already.

Welcome to the land of the lowest-bidder-takes-all. You think they can truly fulfill the contract without breaking a few rules here and there? Note this has less to do with China and more to do with the shady practices of certain defense contractors in general. I'm not talking your Boeings or your Raytheons, I mean the "small business" sorts. For every legit small contractor, there's five scamming the hell out of your taxdollars.

There really is waste, fraud, and abuse in the government. And the vast majority of it comes from private sector leeches.

and hey --- how 'bout that soon to be new bridge in California! You won't catch me driving over it....

"California avoided legal requirements to use domestic steel by not using federal funds for the job. The steel contract went to a state-owned Chinese company, Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries, which had several advantages: modern production facilities, ships to deliver the steel and, of course, low-cost labor. A Chinese steel polisher makes about $12 a day."

California turns to China for new bay bridge (new window)

I would have absolutely ZERO problem with defining those acts as treasonous with death as maximum penalty depending on how egregious the scam and national security exposure are.

I know someone working at the GAO who was part of a group that looked into this problem. The counterfeits run the gambit from clearly fake with new part numbers painted on to astonishingly high quality parts where they used a real integrated circuit packaging plant to re-package the lower quality chips. Some they couldn't even tell for sure were counterfeit (as opposed to just stolen) until they stripped the packaging off and looked for the part numbers on the semiconductor pieces with a microscope.

China doesn't even pretend to try to prevent it. The group found most of the counterfeit chips by just wandering down a road in a manufacturing factory town in China and looking at the buckets of chips the venders had out.

It's cheaper to cheat than to play by face value. COR and COTR are forced to play by face value due to the law; any deviation results in PMITA. Contractors, meanwhile, have no oversight. Contractors promise the sun and deliver a withered fig leaf. Oh, they're not all bad. But there's enough vile scum-suckers to make the entire practice suspect.

Why are we members of shiat like the WTO if nothing is ever enforced against major players, even whenit's to our detriment?

Seriously, what's the point of organizations like that if they don't actually, you know, sanction shiat? At least the UN, for all it's innefectualness, can do sanctions.
