How is it a secret? I mean, it's being talked about on Fark, for Pete's sake.

It is funny that at least one of the names/profiles in this database is a Canadian impostor.

the Koch brothers are close to launching a nationwide database connecting millions of Americans who share their anti-government and libertarian views..

The database will bring together information from a plethora of right-wing groups, tea party organisations and conservative-leaning thinktanks. Each one has valuable data on their membership - including personal email addresses and phone numbers, as well as more general information useful to political campaign strategists such as occupation, income bracket and so on.

Was that The Onion?

So they are starting their own party. The GOP had this system for years. The Dems have VoteBuilder. So what the Koch's have built is a organizational tool for their candidates to use. I'm sure the GOP loves that half of their candidates will now be going to the Koch Brothers for support instead of them.

Meh. It'll be easier to round them up for the camps.

Except when other people do it, it's bad. These are the same people who claimed a journalist server was proof that the liberal media was out to destroy America.

To be born with a bunch of wealth and then achieve 25 billion and then you use that to make it harder for middle class people to get ahead or for poor people to get social services they might need makes you quite a piece of shiat IMO.

Why is it that we have conspiracy theorists who whip up so much drama about things like tomorrow's nationwide broadcast test and child immunization, yet they are completely silent about REAL and MAJOR conspiracies like what the Koch Brothers are trying to do to impose bona-fide Third Reich style fascism on America? It's like the "Business Plot II".

They've ... they've ... developed a mailing list.

Missing from this article is the fact that David ran against Reagan in 1979 on the a platform of legalizing marijuana, cocaine; also that they donated millions to the ACLU to combat the Patriot ACT; $500mil to fund cancer research at MIT; funded programming on PBS, the New York Theatre of the Arts, and American Museum of Science and History.

A mailing list? Someone call me when they buy their first TI-99, the hate-filled old vagina flaps.

2011-11-08 04:58:52 PM
This makes sense for them to do, although they could have picked a less illuminati-ish name for it. The part that actually blew me away was this:

"Kert Davies of Greenpeace estimates that the sum includes $55m since 1997 funding climate change deniers."

I mean, damn! That is a lot of disinformation right there.

Churchy LaFemme: I just don't like entitled, trust-fund douchebags who got lots of their money from the worst dictator in world history.

I'm confused, are they trust-fund douchebags, or did they make their money just this past decade? Or did they double their money under Obama?

Christ, these guys really are all bad things to all you folks, aren't they?

But more seriously, can we chastise Smitty for reducing Themis to a god of human order? She's a transcendent figure, second only to Zeus in the Pantheon in many respects, symbolic of virtually everything that contributed positively to the matrilinear tradition in Greece. Even with the blindfold that we've superimposed on her eyes, she knows better. Themis rocks. And not because she's got good organizational skills.

Libertarians are against 'big-brother' style databases that collect personal info. At least they were before libertarians became "i'm not a Republican, honest."

TFAsays the said database is modeled on one created by the progressive left in 2008. In other words, everyone is doing it, and the Koch are just a bit behind the curve here. BTW, are they paying Larry for the database?

What's the over/under on the date they get busted for illegal coordination with some political campaign somewhere?

Which raises a question or two -- something that lazy journalist forgot to mention in tfa, unless I missed it -- this 'Themis' thingie? Is this being done under the auspices of one of their existing groups? Or is this a new organization? And how is Themis' parent organization organized with respect to the U.S. Tax Code???

Not trying to be overly wonky or anything, this point seems kinda relevant and important.

Oh, leave him alone. He just loves the salty taste, that's all.

Seriously, though, it blows my mind that a lot of people don't see things like this as troubling. These guys are trying to remake the government in their image, and they're not even trying to hide it. The fact that people have just become completely ok with the idea of massive reserves of money giving you the right to do that is proof of how successful their plan has been, so far. These men want you and yours to be theirs, and other billionaire's slaves.

And it really can't be stressed enough that their money came, largely, from dealings with the most brutal and ruthless dictator of the Twentieth Century. How can anyone think that they are a benevolent force for good?

Does this have to do with a cat being put in a garbage bin or a lady saying mean things about a sick girl and her dead mother? Then why would they care? This stuff has actual consequences to peoples lives.

So... if the Koch Brothers have bought a big chunk of the legislative branch, doesn't this mean that the government is technically keeping a database of all known Tea Party associates and sympathizers?

I mean, if I was a libertarian, I'd be kind of concerned about that.

Headso: They are not working for the best interests of the middle class, that's for sure.

Last I checked, they employ some 50,000 Americans, with what one union official (they're heavily unionized, with what are reported to be great relations with their various unions) described as among the best-paid manufacturing jobs in the country. So if "working for the interests of the middle class" means what Obama says it means (getting them jobs, helping them be self-sufficient and to take care of their families, avoiding dependency, promoting a high quality of life), then it looks like the two Koch brothers are doing a shiatload more for the interests of the middle class than all Obama's Legions of bureaucrats.

All without sending me the bill, which (as a member of the aforesaid middle class) I appreciate.

I love it when libs reveal their genuine feelings about actual people doing actual things that they haven't pre-authorized or forced taxpayers to subsidize. Their loathing of democracy and genuine liberty is always just a daydream from the surface.

MFAWG: Ooga Booga! Scary white industrialists!

They orchestrated grand voter fraud in the WI recall elections. Their political wing, Americans For Prosperity, sent fake absentee ballots to homes in Dem-leaning areas, telling them to fill them out and send them to a private PO box instead of the office where an actual vote would be counted.

Scary white industrialists, indeed.
