Unfortunately, before the Fake Paris was finished, the Germans invaded with truckloads of manniquins and the fake Mayor of Paris surrendered to the fake German Army. Pockets of puppet shows held out for the duration of the war, however, calling themselves the Marionette Maquis. A similar attempt during World War II was known as the Vichy Puppet Regime. English Punch and Judy shows operating behind the lines coordinated the Marionnete Maquis with the Christmas pantomines.

Oh, yes they did!

FTFA: The fake cities were built but never tested out as they were only ready after the last German raid on Paris in September 1918.

And we know they didn't use them during WWII!

They tried the same thing in W.W. II, but the Germans figured it out when Hitler visited the Louvre and asked why Mona Lisa was frowning.

All it takes is one wise guy to fark up a great plan.

I watched it the other day on AMC, they bleeped out the no-no words, ALL of them. It really wasn't the same movie. It was a sacrilege really. With the fundys and the political correct crowd, we're doomed. DOOMED I SAY!

The US did this, east of Richmond VA. It was called Elko Tract, and was supposed to look like Richmond or DC from the air at night. The land is now a big industrial park, but there are still some ruins out in the woods

It's always amazing to me the crap you were able to pull in the time before GPS and inertial navigation.

During WWII San Diego, CA was able to camouflage most of the downtown shipyards area, pretty farking cool. Can't find the pictures right now, but here's two shots (before/after) of a similar operation on the Burbank Lockheed facility:

astro716: The US did this, east of Richmond VA. It was called Elko Tract, and was supposed to look like Richmond or DC from the air at night. The land is now a big industrial park, but there are still some ruins out in the woods

Ya kinda beat me to it, but if would allow me to expand a bit?

What is now Elko Tract was called a "K" site, or a dummy airfield, they had them in Norfolk and suffulk as well. What was actually there was a quarter scale replica of the near by Byrd Air field, now Richmond International Airport.

The concept behind these K sites was that if there was a Air invasion of the Eastern seaboard, the enemy would first attack the Navel base at Norfolk, sweep inland and hit targets of opportunity while sweeping north towards DC.
If this was to happen, Richmond and the airfield would've been gone into black out and the dummy airstrip would be lit up. conveniently, the dummy airstrip was surrounded by collapsible buildings that hid anti aircraft guns.

The dummy airstrip is no longer there, that big semi-conductor plant is sitting right on top of it.

The ruins that are out there "The Lost City of Richmond" has actually only been there since the late '50s or so. and is right beside the old K site. The story behind THAT is the land had reverted back to control by Henrico county. Central State Hospital was looking to expand and move, so the county went all out to build up the infrastructure in the area in order to attract the project.
So they built paved roads, a water tower, functioning sewers and street light and various support buildings.

Unfortunately, the neighbors of the area didn't care for the notion of having a state asylum and prison for the criminally insane built in their backyard. So, they got the project canceled. After a few more attempts to find a use for the land, the county gave up, and let the land go back to seed.

During the 70's and 80's erstwhile teenagers would often try to go back down the roads to make out only to find a National guard MP (or whatever they have) knocking on the windows telling them to get lost. That in turn started to fuel rumors of secret missile silos, secret underground government doomsday bunkers, Space Alien reception zone and what not.

In the late '90s the county finally cut a road through it all and sold the place off as an industrial park.

if you head out down Williamsburg road and turn down Technology boulevard, Elko tract is just past the semi conductor plant on the right. you can see the water tower, and some cut outs in the woods where the roads go through. Those roads are still chained over with no trespassing signs.

Cool, thanks for the info. I grew up in northern Chesterfield, and we had our own playgrounds in the woods. So what were MP's doing in the woods anyway? I could believe there was a missile silo out there. There's one really close (and accessable) to PHF just down the road.

That's nothing, look at the work they did disguising Detroit as a post apocalyptic wasteland so no one would bother wasting bombs on it.

Granted the plans got held up so they missed the war, but the commitment more than makes up for the timing.

VaportrailFilms: ...that's what he's saying. Try to pay attention next time.

I payed attention just fine, the author wrote a bad article mentioning technology that wouldn't be used for decades.

If he felt the need to mention it at all, he should have pointed out that radar hadn't been invented yet instead of just mentioning in passing.

The K site, dummy airfield was the eastern most part of their patrol guarding the air national guard base beside the real airport. The MPs would cut through the abandond roads on their way back to the base. And what is now technology blvd was one of the old roads. It connects williamsburg road to portuguege road.
