A man big enough to run for president should be big enough to have a full and candid press conference on all of this -- he wants us to elect him president after all, he's asking us to trust our lives and the country's life to him. This could be one of his finest moments and it could be one of his worst. But either way, he must confront the moment candidly and manfully.

That said, I'll settle for more evasions, as long as they're amusing.

Yeah, gotta say it is far more entertaining watching Cain taunting the dynamite monkey by alternately bullying, threatening and running from the press as they as him about this.

I think he should keep doing that.

In all honesty, I think it's working for him. If this hadn't happened he'd be polling down around Gingrich by now.

The sheer number of women coming out of the woodwork is interesting. He's either a huge poon dawg or some of them have to be false or trumped up. That's alot of pissed off women.

It can't work for him forever. Clinton managed to weather this crisis by going on TV holding his wife's hand, and convincingly lying to the American public. Cain is currently doing his best impression of a wounded and flailing harbor seal in front of the sea full of sharks that is the Washington press.

The press are like a predatory animal. You stop, look them straight in the eye, you can manage to scare them off, but if you run away, their prey drive kicks in and they will give chase.

That wooshing sound you hear isn't the asteroid passing overhead, it's the wind slipping out of Herman Cain's sails.

You saw Mr. Clinton being a lawyer. Technically he didn't have sex with Ms. Lewinsky as there was no possibility of procreation.

I hear Bill Bennett has 10 large down with his bookie that Romney to win the nomination.

2wolves: You saw Mr. Clinton being a lawyer. Technically he didn't have sex with Ms. Lewinsky as there was no possibility of procreation.

No, I am talking about early in the 1992 campaign. Gennifer Flowers came out and gave a press conference detailing their dozen or so years boinking, and Clinton went on TV and successfully bullshat the public, with his loving wife at his side, to emphatically state that it was lies, all lies.

Even though the allegations cost him the NH primary, he still went on to win the nomination and of course the white house. And that's because he faced the allegations head on, and successfully lied his frikking ass off.

FTFA: It is hypocritical in the extreme for those members of the media who didn't take the charges and allegations against Bill Clinton seriously to be taking the allegations against Herman Cain that we now have as seriously as they are. Hypocritical is probably too soft a word, frankly.

Which members of the media are those, exactly? The ones in your head?

FFS, Clinton's sex scandals were national news every time they happened, on the front pages of every rag in the country and 24/7 on CNN.

It would have been so easy to brush the initial story aside. You just say that yes the accusation happened, you don't feel it was legitimate. Also the company decided to make a payout out of fear of negative publicity, you were not involved in that decision. It was a difficult time and you'd like to put it behind you for the sake of your family and stick to the pressing issues of today.

See? Not so hard.

Yes, but you're talking about the man who coined the word Ubeckibeckibeckistan and thinks that a 9-for-9 pizza deal is the solution to America's economic problems. Clearly, we're not exactly talking about the second coming of JFK here.

That's the fresh talking point - the media ignored Clinton's affair.

The media is liberal, after all.

2011-11-08 03:42:55 PM
Diogenes: Definitely not. I don't know why it has for this long.

Three factors:
1) .The mindset: If the liberal media reports it, it must be a lie.
2). The idea that "our" guy is under attack and we need to rally around him.
3). Sexual harassment is just PC thuggery that keeps bros from being bros in the workplace. Stupid sensitive women.

The GOP voters can go quite a ways riding these three factors. They just can't do it forever, and they can't make that appeal to the mushy middle.

Personally I think it's a MUCH bigger deal that Cain presided over a company that makes the absolute worst pizza in the history of mankind, yet he's proud of that "achievement." Do you really want someone who can't even run a pizza company running this country?

It doesn't help that the more he talks about two of the women, the more it opens them up to being able to come out and say exactly what happened.

Exactly.

Everything -- and I mean EVERYTHING -- in modern politics is about crafting bullshiat narratives. And this tawdry spectacle actually plays right into this guy's wheelhouse.

scavenger: Wait, what's this about a Bill Clinton sex scandal? First I've heard of it.

Yeah I dunno. He went white water rafting with Martin Landau or something. They sang "Devil In A Blue Dress", and Bill lost his cigar in a thicket. Huge scandal at the time, but the press just wouldn't touch it.

There's really no need. The conservative ethos is you can pretty much do whatever you want to another person, so long as you get rich doing it.

But Ted Kennedy!

We might as well run with counterarguments of things that happened long ago and already got their media coverage.
