Since when has "beyond a reasonable doubt" been the standard for conviction in drug crimes?

It sounds like the police officers witnessed him trying to hide the drugs. Isn't that what most people are convicted by?

and who says that only some cops and prosecutors are bad?

shouldnt every defense attorney use this case as evidence that their client is also innocent?
clearly being caught read handed trying to hide your stash is not enough evidence for a case.
right ??

almost never. the cops merely have to suspect you've got something to hide and that's it - you're getting a free trip to jail.

lack of evidence

That happens a lot with pot charges. The pigs smoke your reefer and then the charges usually get dropped.

Not a teenager or a minority - did anyone expect this to end differently?

Exactly. Sad to see how the rules change when daddy's Governor though, isn't it.

DNRTFA, but the problem is, if the charges were dropped, then no legal precident was set. A defense lawyer couldn't just point and say "According to the precident set by the article in STL Today, this guy's case was just like my client's! You have to let my guy go free too, neener neener."

A city prosecutor in Columbia has dismissed a citation for marijuana possession against the son of Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon.

So, this procecutor went into the court room, kicked the judge off his bench, ripped his robe from him and donned it, sat on the bench, picked up the gavel and banged it, and then said "Case dismissed."

Really? And all that after he dropped the charges so that the case never got to the court in the first place. That guy is good! I hope he moves here so I can vote for him in the next election for DA.

Kind of like the OU player that committed A&B in Norman but the city attorney is sending it to a mediator instead of pursuing charges. TV station doing man on the street interviews and I can only assume they were trying to find someone who would be outraged and call favoritism, but what do you expect from Norman residents, but the usual "We don';t know the whole story" blah blah crap. They should have went somewhere else to get an opinion.

/like about 90 miles north on I-35 in Stillwater
//they don't commit A&B there, they like the rapier offenses.

Wait.....What?

I didn't see where it ever went to court. The prosecutor just dismissed the citation.

Throw the governor in jail and then legalize weed IMO.

When I saw the original news, I said, "Case dismissed". Besides, Columbia is fairly lenient about MJ.

Shouldn't have been arrested in the first place.

And in most places possession isn't going to end in jail time. They will kill you with bureaucracy. Fines, possible DUI / rehab class etc

especially if you're white and connected.

Fun fact: Columbia, Missouri has a city policy of making marijuana possession convictions a low priority for law enforcement.

If he had been caught on campus, though, his ass would have been shipped home.

I swear, if I were ever to go into politics, this is why. So all my kith and kin can get out of as many consequences as possible. I would be such a positive force. I would never, ever misuse the influence of my office. I promise, truly, cross my heart, pinky swear.

It still blows my mind how strict things are down south of the border. I talk to some people over vent, and telling them a story, and they will stop me mid-sentence and ask 'you mean, you actually smoke weed out in public?'. It completely blows my mind that people are afraid to smoke weed on a non-busy street or even on their own balcony/backyard.

Today's Civics lesson class is on double standards. Notice how people can make their bigoted comments without reprimand when the target of the hatred is Caucasian. This is an accepted practice so please feel free to pile on without fear of being called out as a racist. However, had the party in question not been Caucasian you would be wise to not make mention of that persons actual race. Failing to observe this simple double standard will quickly drop you to the ranks of the child molesters. Please keep this in mind as you interact with society. Thank you and have a nice day.

The prosecutor can dismiss the prosecution's case at any time, just like the defense can dismiss their defense and change the plea to guilty at any time.

Pointing out that drug related punishments very greatly depending on race / socioeconomic factors is not racist.

They just changed all of the sentencing surrounding crack cocaine for these very reasons.

Disproportionately latino / black youth are given harsher punishments for marijuana possession even tho their white counterparts have a higher percentage of use.
