WASHINGTON (AP) - The same Republicans who insist that federal spending doesn't create jobs and should be cut in the face of staggering deficits are leading the charge against smaller military budgets because about a million defense jobs would be lost.

Jesus put defense spending in the constitution, thereby divinely ordaining the dollar multiplier effect, subby.

Heard a teabagger say the military isn't part of the government.

No, seriously.

Face it, both political parties are willing to distort anything or say anything to push their agenda.

At this point, hearing something really stupid that a teabagger says isn't really surprising anymore...

You got to love the hypocrisy here...

These assholes will throw the poor and middle classes under the bus at the drop of a hat to protect tax cuts for the wealthy and will call state workers lazy, entitled leaches while bemoaning "millions of defense jobs lost" if anyone even thinks about cutting the disgustingly bloated defense budgets.

Personally, I'd rather see defense budgets slashed to the bone before we start cutting off heating assistance for the poor and elderly. But I'm not a sociopath like the majority of the GOP.

Eliminate the KC-X program, save five billion dollars.

They could just steal more money from the USPS to cover it.

I'd be more surprised by the GOP if they toned down their hypocrisy at this point.

Get rid of "missile defense".

Stop supplying Israel's military with money and material.

"Defense" weapons-making is one of the last few existing "industries" in this country.

Cheesus: They could just steal more money from the USPS to cover it.

Be fair, the term is "funding a pension to a life-span 7.5 times longer than the amount of time you have to do it". They could just make it an even 10 times and call it a day.

2011-11-08 09:21:41 AM
But at a hearing last week, McKeon, now the committee chairman, argued against cuts to the military, saying, "We don't spend money on defense to create jobs. But defense cuts are certainly a path to job loss, especially among our high-skilled workforces. There is no private sector alternative to compensate for the government's investment."

Translated: "I don't care about logic. I want take to have it both ways politically, and for everyone to just accept that."

Asked about the competing statements, a spokesman for McKeon, Claude Chafin, said they were "not inconsistent" because the defense industry is a unique recipient of federal dollars.

Translated: "Your pork is waste. My pork is a precious, delicate flower that must be cared for absent of all political ramifications."

And if we can just fit all the knowledge one needs onto an index card roughly the size of what Perry wants for a 1040, we can just hand it out at churches (where every American should be every Sunday) for self-study!

Well it's not as though the money could be spent inside the us on projects that utilize a large range of skills, from people with advanced colledge education down to ditch diggers, that would improve the US economy. I mean infrastructure upgrades, mass transit and development of alternative energy power plants don't even remotely fit the bill.

whatnow; Teachers are a waste of tax payer dollars. Defense contractors, however, are the backbone of society.

And think of it like a good capitalist would.

You can invest $1 million in a teacher, from training, education, all the way through to retirement and beyond, or you can pony up $1 million for a single solitary missile that is DESIGNED TO BE DESTROYED whether or not it is effectively used.

Do you people really not understand the difference between a private contractor who operates through a competitive bidding process to provide an essential service and what politicians have been pushing lately: government handouts, temporary stimulus, and funds to prop up already bloated govt bureaucracies? Granted, in the case of farm and 'green' energy subsidies, it can be hard to tell the difference.

Our defense capability, both in numbers and dollars spent, has been halved over the last 20 years, not counting the extra war costs. If we cut it much further, we risk a situation where we fall so far behind that the risk of a major war increases du to our inability to project power.

Ha ha ha ha, you naive fool....

Why do you think defense contractors are immune to graft and giving kickbacks to politicians to adopt a particular weapon system or a new military vehicle?

There is literally no way that an aerospace engineering defense contractor could turn their expertise to high speed rail or other infrastructure projects.

We have 300 million/7 billion people on the planet and spend 40% of the entire's world's military... china, which has 1 billion, spends 9% of the world's... so shut the hell up

If we slashed our defense budget in half, the US Air Force would still be the largest air force in the world... Know what the second largest air force in the world would be in that scenario?

The US Navy.

Subby, the same argument works in reverse. Most of the people on Fark who support more stimulus also support defense cuts.
