If that virus found in Iranian centrafuges was an indication of our capabilities, we can give as good as we can take in a cyberwar.

Was the "Unlikely" tag out fapping?

When the Chinese can produce a supercomputer with over 1 petaflop of capability with their own hardware, we should be worried. They can't. It's the Cold War all over again... the communist states are copying the capitalist ones in computers and are doing so poorly.

This simple rule will eliminate a large portion of your problems: Keep critical systems the fark off the internet. Joe and Jermain Schmuck do NOT need to be playing FarmVille, checking eBay auctions, or posting cats on Fark (like I do) from those systems. If they "demand" access to the internet, like some dipshiats I've had to support have done in the past, then send them a link to Monster.com with the subject line: "Get the hint?"

"The axis of evil" has no meaningful cyber war capabilities.

Actually it would like most our past wars. At first we'd get our asses handed to us, then all the hackers not in government service would join up and kick the other guys butts.

It would suck for a while though.

He's right in a way, our critical infrastructure is much more dependent on being networked because we have more advanced capabilities to do so. The problem comes in the fact that most SCADA systems were not designed to be used in conjunction with general networks and especially the internet. They were designed to be monitored by some dude sitting 4 feet away in a control room. But then people got all excited that they could network everything and downsize and have a guy in Montana monitor 500 sites all by himself! There are HUGE flaws in that thinking, namely all of the vulnerabilities in SCADA systems because they weren't designed to work that way.

So yeah it would suck mainly because of our dependance on said systems. And our attacks would be fruitless, like taking away guns from a culture that uses bows and arrows.

pffft

The biggest damage is not to military networks but civilian networks; if the US goes to war with say China, Iran or even NK, their "hackers" can launch attacks on the civilian infraestructure.

Imagine the damage if they take out BoA and Chase networks for 24 hours; or a huge chunk of VISA or MasterCard.

Power plants, hospitals, they don't have to attack the DoD or the military, just civilian networks.

For the american part; there is less and less dedication towards engineering, or even computer science; I'm an IT Security specialist and I'm doing a masters in the US in Computer Science here 90% of the students are foreign. Some are chinese, there's a couple from Iran... they'll go back to their countries when the master is done.

Why? Steve Jobs told Obama (I read it on his bio) visa options for foreigners with advanced degrees specially in engineering are grim; H1B caps and all. He told Obama "You need to make a visa available for foreign engineers who get advanced degrees here".

You guys need more prepared people, and clearly, americans are more interested in liberal arts and OWS than securing their infraestructure.

Here's the big secret that no nation-state wants you to know about internet vulnerability: Without electricity, the internet doesn't work!

/Amazing. Everyone knows he power never goes out in wars or at any other time.
//Imagine that.
///Wow.

Do our regular noncyber weapons still work? Because I am thinking we could just use those to destroy the infrastructure of whoever is cyber attacking us.

You know, worst comes to worst.

yeah that would be a really inconvenient day. I'd have to go to the bank and get out cash. Lameskies. Then we'd all have to use cash. Double Lame.

If there's no "system" how are you going to get your money out?

If the teller doesn't know how much money you have because his terminal is down, how will he give you money?

That's what I was saying about targeting BoA or Chase; not just a lame DDOS on their website, but actual attacks to their central infrastructure.

Do we not have a branch of military yet specifically dedicated to defending cyber attacks? If not we should really get on something like that

DHS is running that, and they're building the team stronger all the time, from industry. I recently saw a panel discussion from these folks, and I was quite impressed with the brain power and answers to some tough questions.

They showed up at the Vegas convention and started recruiting.

Why "attack" anyone to take a system down?

All they have to do is send a mail to enter a contest for a chance to win a free sex act with the celebrity of your choice, or a shot on American Idol, and most stupid Americans would willingly give away access rights to critical systems.

*facepalm*

In a real war you need to worry about the planes and bombs and missiles... not scriptkiddies 0wz0r1ng some computer systems.

China is not going to attack us.

1) Their economy depends critically on us.

2) Our military would level them.

3) We all have NUKES.

This article cannot possibly be true.

At best China and maybe Israel could hurt us. No one else can touch us.

Really, China is already hurting us at a pretty severe level by hacking and stealing IP, business plans, and everything else they need to out-negotiate US companies.

Here is the problem for anyone looking to attack the US.

Sure, you'll do some damage, but you won't knock us out entirely, and then we'll kill your family, your extended family, your neighbors, your village, your territory, your aunt's sister-in-law's stepchilds herd dowry, and let you live out the rest of your days with a 10mil + bounty on your head until one day someone appears in your bedroom to end it all, or a Predator makes the news at your expense.

Looks like a lot of that is licensed from MIPS. At least they bothered to ask for the permission to use it... the Soviets just copied IBM designs without license, converted the specs to metric (which resulted in tolerances they didn't have the technology to produce), and ended up with machines that were several years behind their American counterparts and not as accurate with computations.

Why aren't all of our most sensitive and control mechanisms on closed circuits?
