It's not Ryan it's Ryne.

The Cubs turned him down. St. Louis is a great opportunity for him. Any idiot that badmouths him for it deserves a swift cockpunch.

If signed, hopefully he'll name Ernie Banks as bench coach.

You can keep him St. Louis. The guy is a prick.

Ryne Sanderg?

I hope it happens just so Dan Bernstein can dedicate an entire show to calling Cubs fans stupid for overreacting to it.

/Has absolutely nothing against Cubs fans
//But a lot have been acting kinda silly this past month...

Bernstein's overreactions are fantastic. I have to say I agree with him here though, many Cubs fans care way too much about some really stupid shiat.

I don't care if Ryno becomes a Cardinal. I don't care if I ever hear "Go Cubs Go" again. I don't care if they make Wrigley Field Look worse than Soldier Field if it means winning a World Series. I don't care about curses, Bartman, or Harry Caray. I just want to see them win.

I actually heard a caller, who was obviously older than middle aged, say on WGN radio that he wants the Cubs to remain lovable losers. Sorry pal but you're not a Cubs fan, you're a rube.

I am as big a Cubs fan as you'll find. I own a Sandberg jersey. I couldn't give two shiats if he manages the Cardinals. If he gets it, good for him for getting the job.

I am happy that the new owners and executives of the Cubs understand what a modern baseball team is. I am more excited about the next few losing seasons of rebuilding than I was for the 07-08 postseason runs.

"Sustained success" is Theo Epstein's new catchphrase, and I couldn't be happier about it. I am thrilled that the Cubs are going to systematically change the drafting and development of players. Come 2014 or 2015 we will start seeing real baseball players come up regularly, the albatross contracts will come off the books, and the Cubs will be one of those teams that always seem to be in the race every year.

From the outside looking in, why exactly has Chicago spurned Ryno? This is 2 at least, and I think 3. Did he burn some bridges inside the organization? the guy has paid his dues, after all. He's been riding the minor league buses, as they say, for what, 10 years now? He isn't the dilettante coach that quits MLB and then 2 years later starts clamoring for a managerial job.

odd.

fatalvenom: It's not Ryan it's Ryne.

"Ummm....Is *hick* this the part where I'm supposed to say, 'who is Ryyyyyyyyyyan Sandberg?'"

"it's not 'ryan', it's RIIIIIIINE".

/jim rome show was cooler when he wasn't broadcasting with KB's jock on the microphone.

Hey if he was a White Sox alumni Kenny Williams would have hired him!

Won't happen. The Cards job will go to Jose Oquendo or Terry Francona.

2011-11-08 11:16:05 AM
As a lifelong Cubs fan, I have no problem with this. Theo Epstein has made a point to say they want someone with previous major league managerial experience and Ryno just hasn't gotten it yet. The last few seasons have just kind of gone by. Honestly had no hopes of them doing anything this year. Bringing Theo in is huge in my opinion and once again gives me hope.

Not Francona. After the meltdown in Boston last year, do you really think he could keep the egos in St. Louis in check? The team has been pretty balanced overall, but there are at least four guys on that roster (assuming Pujols returns) that have been/could be legitimate "face of the franchise" types.

I also heard a rumor that Joe McEwing was in the running. I don't really know what to say to that.

This past month?

I have a mancrush on Bernstein.

The Cubs really had no choice with Ryno. The options were:

1. Hire a legend knowing that he'd be coaching the worst team ever assembled with a GM that was on the bubble.

2. Hire a guy who was ~just~ likable enough to be accepted for a year or two, but also suitable for playing the scapegoat for the worst team ever assembled.

As much as I would have loved to see him in the bigs, they did Ryno a favor.

I think the Cards would be smart to snatch him. As much as they are a sworn enemy to the north side, it's one of the most "Respectable" rivalries in all of sports. I wish 'em the best, as long as it isn't better than us.

Sugarmoobs: As a lifelong Cubs fan, I have no problem with this.

Except you know if Sandberg goes to the Cardinals, he wins 4 world series. But if he signs with the Cubs, they will still suck.

I'm ok with the Cubs not hiring him, and I'm ok with him going elsewhere. I just don't like the fact that being one of the ultimate ex-Cubs means he'll bring the karma that goes with that status to St. Louis.

I'm hoping the Cubs take Maddux. They need a pitching guy as the manager.

I understand they want to build a new culture in the organization but I think it would be a disservice to hand Ryno this team. From every anecdote I've heard he is a great coach with the Phillies and Cubs minor leaguers. But the current Cubs team is not going to win soon. I'd hate to see him taint his legacy here by posting 2 or 3 straight losing seasons and being run out of town by some idiots who think by just getting a new GM and coach this year will automatically take them to the WS. Have some patience and Ryno will be back in some capacity at the right time.

The Cardinals' situation is pretty crazy when you think about it. When was the last time that they actually had a bad manager? Yeah, Joe Torre wasn't very good with the Cards, but he was only there for maybe four years between Whitey Herzog and Tony LaRussa and played guys like Todd Zeile and Felix Jose every day. Of course, Herzog had that great run in the 80s, taking over for Red Schoendienst, who took over for Johnny Keane. All three quality gents in a dugout.

It'll be interesting to see who they think can fill shoes of that size.

That sound you hear is the sound of this Cubs fan not giving a damn, subby. The hiring of Theo Epstein has given me a zen-like calm about the Cubs' situation. Ask me what I think of the Cards getting Ryno to manage in 2014 when the Cubs should be poised to steamroll the division for years to come.

/and also I was quite pleased that Sandberg wasn't hired to manage the 2011 team
//the 2011 team had disaster written all over it in the preseason

shhh. It's much better when Cub fans don't know. It's easier to spot the dumb ones.

And why do you say that? I have never liked the Cubs, lifelong White Sox fan, but Sandberg and Dawson are two of their players that I did like.

I know very little about how radio talk shows work, but the ability to play that clip at every instance of the name "Ryan" being said is truly awesome for me.

Looking like the Cards are close to hiring Francona.

I'd go after Francona instead, myself, but eh.

/Why does this make me want to complain about Dusty Baker?
//Did the Reds fire him yet?

I wish Theo would stop pussyfooting around and just announce Terry Francona's starting date. You =know= it's gonna happen.

The Bestest: Looking like the Cards are close to hiring Francona.

They interviewed him today. Still have to talk to Oquendo and the Ryno. Personally, I think I'd almost prefer Matheny at this point. It would be nice to see Oquendo finally get a shot at the bench, though.
