Thompson himself much preferred Murray's portrayal to Depp's. If the commentary from the Fear and Loathing DVD is any indication, it was largely due to his aversion to being played by a diminutive actor.

Are we sure the childrens can handle seeing a president smoke in a movie? I mean, the public obviously couldn't handle it at the World War II memorial (new window) after anti-smoking activists got their way and got FDR's cigarette holder removed. And the PETA folks managed to get Eleanor Roosevelt's fur removed, too. Nothing like a little revisionist history.
