Is this like when the Russians retrieved their ship from the pirates last year they put them in a raft and put them in the water to float around and think about their pathin life?

There are so many Somali pirates out there. They should really extend the season and the bag limit.

Is it stupid of me to wonder what a Taiwanese fishing boat was doing off the coast of Somalia in the first place?

I have no problem with desperate people becoming pirates.

However, I have no problem with people dealing with pirates the way pirates should be dealt with, to wit: marooning, keel-hauling, flogging, or summary executions.

If these Taiwanese fishermen threw the Somali pirates overboard to drown or be eaten by sharks, well, that's the price of piracy.

fishing the somalian fishing grounds. since they don't have a government they can't stop foreign fishers from coming in and taking whatever catch they want. They also don't have environmental laws or catch limits (obviously) so fishermen from other countries can make a larger profit fishing in somalia waters.

fun fact, the original pirates started off as somali fishermen who got fed up with having their fish taken and get their nets and lines run over and cut by foreign fishers. they moved on to piracy when they realized the pay was so good.

The pirate problem is a matter of overfeeding, just like pigeons.

Piracy makes money in a population where there are no other options so as long as ransoms are paid, the problem will only get bigger.

The solution? Send four LNG carriers off the coast of Somalia on remote control, wait for the pirates to board, detonate. Repeat with various types of ships until they figure out that their vocation carries a 75% chance of death and the problem will go away.

Not a bad idea. Many people forget that before the invention of the airplane, pirates were the biggest threat to commerce and trade in the world. These pirates are no different from the cartels overrunning Mexico, beheading not only their rivals, but sheriffs and newspaper editors as well. It's about time we stopped showing them any mercy!

Knara: Pondering now, does Taiwan have mandatory military service?

They did... I think they are abolishing it soon or did abolish it a little whiles back. There were always so many loopholes in the call-up law anyways, it was quite blatantly biased against the poor. My uncle, from a fairly wealthy family, got out of it by claiming he had flat feet. Ya, rly.

My dad had no such luck. They were given one M1 per 4-5 soldiers and ran around the island getting coached on how they were going to execute this "imminent" plan to invade the mainland. Mind you, this was back in the 1960s, so it wasn't as farcical an idea as it is now.

An LNG tanker costs about $210 million. You guys aren't very good at this cost-benefit thing, are you?
