I don't think he should count as he was more of the mentor than a sidekick

Okay, sure they're not great sidekicks.

Obviously Not Sidekicks

Capt. John Mason - 'The Rock' - check out the scene in the sewer after the seal team dies for further clarification
Walter Sobchak - 'The Big Lebowski' - friend not sidekick
Sloth - 'The Goonies' What?!
Samwise Gamgee - 'The Lord of the Rings' Bromance partner (well I suppose he is a sidekick)
Hannibal Lecter - 'The Silence of the Lambs' - Insane cannibal is not a sidekick
Jules Winnfield - 'Pulp Fiction' - No
Mr. Miyagi - 'The Karate Kid' - A mentor and sensei

I think the author needs to think about what sidekick means. I would go with "a subordinate with the same goal as the lead partner"

Arguably the greatest movie sidekick is Marty McFly. Now he is the focus of Back to the Future but he is subordinate to the Doc in every way. The Doc tells him what to do, comes up with the plans and saves the day from Marty's general stupidity. In part 2 the Doc drives the time machine, in 3 he drives the train (despite the physical and dangerous nature of climbing out to the time machine) If Marty were the lead in their duo there is no way he leave his girlfriend on a porch at a whim while the Doc risks life and limb for his woman like a real hero.

RexTalionis: Short Round is the worst part of Temple of Doom, and that's saying a lot.

He's the second worst part, and to my knowledge he wasn't farking Spielberg then so he could have been replaced.

Indiana Jones: one great movie crammed into 3 4 films.

Burninate: I'm in a caring mood. Below, from #1 to #18.

Buzz Lightyear - 'Toy Story' Decent
Capt. John Mason - 'The Rock' Meh
Chewbacca - 'Star Wars' Cool
Garth Algar - 'Wayne's World' Ok, but I didn't get the hype about Wayne's World. It was ok at best.

Walter Sobchak - 'The Big Lebowski' I'm going to catch flack for this, but still haven't seen it.
Short Round - 'Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom' Was ok, minorly annoying
Sloth - 'The Goonies' One of my favorites
Goose - 'Top Gun' Was ok.
Samwise Gamgee - 'The Lord of the Rings' Sam was meh, Merri and Pippin were where it was at.
Doc Holliday - 'Tombstone' The first real kickass sidekick listed.
Fezzik - 'The Princess Bride' Cool
Hannibal Lecter - 'The Silence of the Lambs' WTF is this shiat? Sidekick?
Jules Winnfield - 'Pulp Fiction' Awesome character, but neither Jules nor Vince was all that dominant to the other.
Mr. Miyagi - 'The Karate Kid' Huh?
Capt. Louis Renault - 'Casablanca' Still haven't watched.
Mickey Goldmill - 'Rocky' Decent, but more mentor kinda thing like in Karate Kid.
Ratso Rizzo - 'Midnight Cowboy'
Mona Lisa Vito - 'My Cousin Vinny'

Emmett Quincy: That don't bring nobody to mind. A funny lip?
Rooster Cogburn: Wasn't always like that, I shot him in it.
Emmett Quincy: In the lower lip? What was you aiming at?
Rooster Cogburn: His upper lip.

Speaking of Casablanca, Renault is not who I would pick to be the sidekick in it. He wasn't a "sidekick" until the last few minutes of the film. If anybody in that movie is a sidekick, it would probably be Sam.
