Why are rap man in bad for the ecomnoy? If Cain even whips up a good-fructose corn syrup, it should be at least manadatory to come up with a nother name besides honey. That is all. Tebow haters can suck it

fark big agra. fark the box stores.

Find a farmer's market in your area and USE IT.

HFCS is poison.

Ah, the quarterly Fark HFCS thread.

Last year I bought a nice jar of honey, had a piece of honeycomb in it. "That's classy," I thought. Got it home, read the (EU) label. It was corn syrup. I gave it away. A pity. It really was classy-looking.

I have to say that this saddens, but doesn't surprise me.

I love honey, and I've thought about getting myself an apiary to keep my own bees. Maybe it's time I finally did it.

This is why I buy my honey from a local producer. Plus the pollen in it helps cut back on the allergies.

2011-11-07 01:26:07 PM
Holy shiat, it's honey. Why the hell does it have to be that complicated?

2011-11-07 01:26:15 PM
At least some products are making an effort to not use the stuff -- like Heinz' "Simply Heinz" brand of ketchup.

I honestly don't know what to believe when it comes to HFCS, since both sides are equally logical to my brain. So I tend to err on this side of caution and stay away from it. It is amazing, though, how many products it is actually in -- even things you don't expect to find it in. (Diet Snapple, for example.)

I'm actually pretty shocked that Wegmans Clover Honey is on the list. I mean I buy honey from the Rochester Public market anyway but...still...that's absolute bull.

We need to be able to vote with our money as to whether or not we want to eat food made with Chinese ingredients. I'd rather not eat their toxic effluvia, but what can you do? It's in everything.

Isn't honey just high fructose bee vomit anyway?

I read a good article on the Atlantic about maple syrup. We almost became an empire of maple syrup.... too bad.

I bought a pint of milk the other day at a gas station just for a fix. The label on this milk proclaimed "Contains no high fructose corn syrup!". I was confused about when cows installed a nozzle on (next to?) the udder that distributes high fructose corn syrup as the cow is being milked.

I've also seen it in loaves of bread fer chrissakes! Why is it in bread? And ice cream? And prepackaged apple slices? And a ton of other products that really should only have a handful of ingredients in them?

Corn syrup (and corn in general) is in too many of the products we buy. I don't think the corn industry really needs any of that subsidy money any more as surely they've achieved market saturation by now.

/in before 'only buy natural ingredients and make from scratch because everyone has that time and money, hurr durr'?

You're lucky if they put any maple in your maple syrup, never mind the other stuff they throw in.

We have a local bee guy, about once every 6 months we get another quart of the stuff. fresh.

No HFCS, or other crap. Just Bee vomit and pollen...mmm mmm good.

Soon you'll be able to buy corn syrup in the shape of bread loaves, apples, fish fillets, and more! Because corn syrup has a high profit margin than what you thought you were buying.

As to honey, you should only buy it if the guy who harvested it puts his address on the label.

Um, dear Subliterate and darling Adminidiot who greened this: TFA article has NOTHING to do with HFCS. It's about the fact that most of the honey being sold in our stores comes from China, which is in deep doo-doo for selling contaminated honey. To avoid more trouble they have been filtering their honey to eliminate all pollen which means they can pass it off as coming from different countries.

Although I like to laugh at the people buying agave syrup that is higher in fructose than high fructose corn syrup.

"Eventually, some honey packers became worried about what they were pumping into the plastic bears and jars they were selling. They began using in-house or private labs to test for honey diluted with inexpensive high fructose corn syrup or 13 other illegal sweeteners or for the presence of illegal antibiotics. "
"Concocting a sweet-tasting syrup out of cane, corn or beet sugar, rice syrup or any of more than a dozen sweetening agents is a great deal easier, quicker and far less expensive than dealing with the natural brew of bees."

But, yeah, you're right. This article is more about geographic fraud.

"76 percent of samples bought at groceries had all the pollen removed"

"And if you have to buy at major grocery chains, the analysis found that your odds are somewhat better of getting honey that wasn't ultra-filtered if you buy brands labeled as organic. Out of seven samples tested, five (71 percent) were heavy with pollen. All of the organic honey was produced in Brazil, according to the labels."

The organic samples are at 71% vs. 76% for all samples. How is that improved odds of getting pollen?

Oh, and by the by, honey typically contains around 38% fructose. Link (new window)

Your statement is true, however I'm glad the article was posted anyway, because my son is allergic to corn. We'll definitely be getting our honey locally from now on.

Ted Haggard's Poop-Stained Replicock: Thats' what we need - more citizen-led organizations to keep our shiat for real.

Damn straight! I'm tired of the image of local producer or farmer being some poor sad-sack who had no other option than to "git own down t' didd'ys farm". There's pride in making a good product. And my uncle was a farmer who raised the BEST tasting pigs.

The secret? There was a Zagnut plant in the town near his farm (South Carolina). You could buy the broken Zagnuts by the truckload and feed them to your pigs. Sweet!

Hmm...wonder if this way of thinking could carry over into other areas...

2011-11-07 01:37:41 PM
The article was mostly about pollen and steeped heavily in a potential conspiracy to hide the real country of origin a honey really comes from. HFCS is mentioned but not the focus.

But I get rather skeptical anytime an article goes out of its way to throw the FDA under the bus. I'm not saying I blindly trust the FDA, but experience has led me to trust them more than most internet sources. (See also "Dr Oz versus the FDA" where Oz said "OMG Apple Juice Not Inspected" and the FDA issued a press release, "Like hell we don't. Also, your testing is all wrong. Noob." [Paraphrased])

The FDA doesn't seem to mess around much - if they think something's harmful they're probably all over it; conversely, if there's no real science that says something's bad, they're probably not giving a crap.
