No really new. Computers have been providing organisms stimulus and the organism have performed reproductive functions typically in the absents of mates. I turn the organisms have provide feed back to the computers that originally provided the stimulus.

Nifty if minor step... I'm pretty sure out of the oodles of proteins and whatnot a yeast can produce, very few of them can be controlled by shining light on the yeast.


Mind you, a bioarray combined with a sophisticated protein synthesizer hooked to the nutrient feed might be of interest for the applications they list in the conclusions...

Did anyone else read that and be overjoyed that Deus Ex-like augmentations are coming, but then get crushed by the fact that it will probably take another 100 years?
