No GOP, just go back to your viewpoint from a year or two ago: throw some warm body up for 2012 and set your sights for 2016. With the Senate filibuster in place and the House relatively locked down, the GOP doesn't have to worry about much more sweeping Domestic policy change. They do have to worry about Obama undoing the neocon foreign policy disasters, however.

And the only one with both a chance of getting the nomination and a chance of winning the general has a history of having every single position in the book, depending on who he's talking to.

I'd say this current crop is actually the most accurately representative collection of presidential candidates to ever stand for a party.

I do wish that the party had someone to at least politely fall on their sword like Dole did. Instead of putting out at least credible folks, the leadership is bound and determined to put out the most idiotic or least ethical.

When folks consider Newt as a serious candidate, there is a problem, and it boils down to a media led push pull that is strangling my party, and a leadership that is complicit with it because they need the cash from stoopid people...

There's something to be said for the theory that they're intentionally hanging their powerful but least electable out to dry so they can field a stronger crop in 2016.

Yes. Good Lord, *I'm* that smart, and I'm not a paid political operative.

They do not want the White House in 2012.

They want to Senate and they want to keep the house. They know the country is broken, and its better to blame the Democrat than actually do the hard work to fix it. They hope they can get another two years in before there's an actual demand for change that they can't ignore.

They know that Obama is incredibly popular PERSONALLY, which isn't something any one of their candidates have, electoral math does not look good for them- the Ohio, New Hampshire and Florida GOP are all looking really, really rough for 2012. You cannot beat a popular Democrat if you can't get one of those states.

So...they're gonna run Romney. He's not going to win. He's not supposed to win. He's supposed to introduce the country to the next Sarah Palin and fire up the base so they go to the polls and vote for anyone with an "R" next to their name.

Quasar: I'd say this current crop is actually the most accurately representative collection of presidential candidates to ever stand for a party.

A pandering POS who has a history of doing something actually good and is haunted by it, a restaurant owner who thinks that's enough to know how to run the country, a guy who's whole campaign depends on hating gays, a "family values" man who's divorced two wives by cheating on them with the next wife, a woman who thinks gays and liberals have destroyed America, and a guy who thinks everything will be perfect without any regulation.

Yeah, that sums up the GOP.

2011-11-07 01:43:56 PM
Silly, the GOP does not want to win this in the slightest. It is much easier to blame Obama for everything from the creation of man to the upcoming zombie apocalypse.

Basically. They figure they can not only eliminate some power players, but allow the Democrats and that uppity black man to continue dealing with the shiat sandwich this country is and filibuster every attempt at recovery so that they can point and say "LOOK WHAT HAPPENED THE DEMS HAD 8 YEARS AND WE'RE NO BETTER OFF". And it will work. And they'll have 16 glorious years of terrible Republican presidents digging a greater hole while currying favor with little tax cuts that we'll be paying for years down the line, where a Democrat gets elected into another shiat sandwich. Repeat.

Personally I wish we could scrap the whole thing and start over.

Well given that he never thought to change his name, and wanted a career in politics, i'd have to say no, Rance Preibus is not that smart (just like the GOP candidate running here in VA whose last name is "Ramadan" (though, like "Bobby" Jindal, he was smart enough to convert his first name from Imad to "David")

While I did not agree with Dole all the time, you had to respect the man. What the party did to him in that run embarrasses me.

That might be the case except that you've got a perfectly qualified, articulate, experienced candidate who's been a governor and ambassador as well as working at Commerce. He's there but your fellow Republicans don't seem to want him. I don't think its the lack of a credible candidate. I hope you guys come to your senses and at least give him a serious look.

Romney: Tortures dogs

Gingrich: Divorced wife with cancer to marry a younger woman, later divorced her for a younger woman.

Cain: Serial rapist

Santorum: Believes blastocysts have more rights than gay adults.

Bachmann: Tortures gays

Ron Paul: Named his son after Ayn Rand.

Huntsman: RINO

Since the GOP debates commenced, Gingrich has steadily crept back into double digits in most polls, based on something surprising: ideas. He has little money, he has few ground troops, he has unleashed no attack ads, but he has answered questions clearly, forthrightly, and knowledgeably.

I don't think we're talking about the same Gingrich.

The GOP doesn't have to panic because they exist as part of our black & white political party system. For most members of the two major political parties, voting for the worst possible candidate of their party is more palatable than voting for the best possible candidate of the other.

He'll go in with the low double digit support in the beginning, get the air time that he deserves from the MSM and get into the healthy 28%-33% support he'll need for the nomination.
Good luck beating that.

The GOP is a business first, and a political body second. Their main focus is on money and personal enrichment. A Democrat in the white house is one of their best marketing tools to sell their canned outrage to their customers. They don't want to try too hard and accidentally win the presidency though, but if they don't try hard enough, they'll lose a lot of their customers. It's a bloody tightrope.

Bob Dole went on to make Viagra commercials. I think the current crop has a few guys that would be great for that Cain (sexual harasser), Newt (old dude, infidelity, needs viagra to get it up when his wife gives him the crazy eye), Perry (could conceivably have trouble getting it up when drunk), Bachman (her husband probably needs it with her).

What bothers me is that somehow a President should be "electrifying", as if they're auditioning for "X Factor" instead of being tapped to run the friggin' country.

Somacandra: That might be the case except that you've got a perfectly qualified, articulate, experienced candidate who's been a governor and ambassador as well as working at Commerce. For what it's worth, I agree with you, in that he really is the best the GOP is putting forth, and even he's a bit on the derpy side for a moderate Republican.

However, it's not that "your fellow Republicans" don't want him, it's that "your loud, well-funded, extremist right-wing nutjobs running the Republican party like it's a religious cult" don't want him - he doesn't fit in well because he's not hitting all the right talking points and code words. Even if he managed to weave his way out of the morass the top four candidates are creating for the GOP, Huntsman would then be decimated in a contest with Obama.

That could discourage a man, and the GOP doesn't want to lose him. So, if you're the GOP, you make sure this guy stays in the race, so he can be billed as "a Presidential candidate", winnow him out during the primary, and keep his skill set in an advisory capacity while you throw the derpy morons jockeying for "GOP Attention Whore" to the media wolves. The GOP has already washed their hands of the Presidential nomination - any of these derpy morons is good enough to lose to Obama, and they know it. They would rather throw one or more of the derpy morons under the bus than lose Huntsman.

Or, at least, that's what I would do if I had to deal with this particular field of candidates - one can only polish a turd so much, after all, and so my best bet would be to throw the eager derpy morons to the wolves, keep the useful folks, and regroup for 2014's Congressional Cock-up.
