Not all that surprised. The UK electrical retail market is incredibly tough and works on tiny margins. From memory, the electrical retailers that have gone bust include Rumbelows, Clydesdale, Escom, Tempo, Miller Brothers, Miller Brothers again, Empire Direct, Powerhouse, Bennetts, Laskeys and more. And Comet is circling the drain....

Carphone Warehouse?...that name only sounds slightly dated. They should update it to "Beepers Unlimited"

Is it normal to be treated like a criminal after buying goods in America?

Went to a UK Best Buy recently. They insisted on stamping my receipt, then a guy on the door checked my receipt and made sure the receipt matched the contents of my bag.

That's somewhat normal, yeah. There's no receipt-stamping, but the guy at the door has to check your receipt against your stuff for any big-ticket items. Shoplifting's a big problem for them, and that's their solution.

PC World, Currys, Currys.digital, Dixons Travel (airport shops) and Dixons.co.uk are all the same company and if Comet go out of business the only major bricks and mortar consumer electronic competition will be supermarkets.

Not that BestBuy was going to save electronic retail competition since it brings together arguably two of the most underhand rip-off merchants about but some competition is better than none.

The main competition these days is from the supermarkets. Tesco, Asda etc at the bottom end and John Lewis at the top end. Even if Comet (including Laskeys and Kitchen Science online brands) went under DSG would find it very hard to increase prices by much.

Also happens in lots of other countries, and not just electrical goods.

Hey just go to Micro Center. They'll help you out buying equipment to build your computer.

Whatever happened to Circuit City? Didn't they open some new stores recently?

It isn't just about price though because with only one major retailer you get limited choice too. Supermarkets aren't focussed on choice either but hey at least Amazon and Play provide a good online presence.

I'd be willing to bet that Best Buy will start closing stores in the US in the near future. They grew too fast and shoe-horned their way into too many small markets that can't support them when the economy is in the tank. Couldn't happen to a nicer company.

/haven't spent a penny at a Best Buy in over 3 years.

What about buy more , do they have good deals or just CIA agents everywhere?

You'll see a lot of their stores closing, but I don't really think it's for this reason. Right now they've got a LOT of overhead tied up in real estate. More and more people are using their stores as showrooms for what they want to buy online. They'll check it out in best buy, play with it, and go order it off of newegg. Best Buy has since begun to compete, but at this point, they're pretty far behind in that arena and they've squandered whatever reputation they had.

Didn't help that most of the video games, movies, and CDs are moving to digital formats (itunes, netflix, steam, gamefly, etc.), so physically going to the store to purchase these things isn't necessary.

What they do have is that a lot of their sub-brands have been seeing pretty tremendous increases. Their mobile division seems to magically see around 40% increases in growth (employees/profits/locations) on a yearly basis. They tend to have some pretty good deals as well.

They're not out of the game yet, but I def think you'll see them moving away from the Big Box model. Don't know if they'll be able to get away from it before their real estate sinks 'em though.

Microcenter is okay if you need something and can't wait for newegg to deliver it, but they also seem to have let their prices creep up now that most cities they're in don't have any competition for them.

Yes. Not sure about the UK, but in the US it's perfectly legal to tell those people where they can stick it and walk past them. If they detain you, you can call the police and have them arrested for false imprisonment.

Regardless of Comet, Best Buy and the supermarkets, DSG regard the real competition as Amazon and the like - while aiming to provide superior service than the bricks and mortar competitors the pricing is now being aimed squarely at Amazon...

I said Comet were circling the drain. The entire chain has just been sold for two pounds.
