I hate Christmas.

2011-11-06 07:51:08 PM
I'm already sick of lining up at 4am with 500 other people in the hopes of snagging one of the twenty $WIDGETS they'll actually have in stock, and Black Friday isn't for another three weeks.

2011-11-06 07:52:53 PM
Already have my 58" plasma, thank you very much.

At any rate... I see cheapo Westinghouse 32" 1080p TVs for $200 at Best Buy, and somewhat better Visio 32" 1080p TVs for $250. Black friday prices should be pretty good for those who haven't upgraded yet, or need a bedroom TV.

Yup. I have been waiting patiently.

You can always come over and watch my 73" DLP, Subby.

I'm thinking I'll trade up to 82"...maybe a 92" I just need to find a long enough base for it.

Chode dropped.

2011-11-06 08:07:05 PM
I bought a POS 65" DLP last year... no way the wife will let me get something else for at least another 3-4 years :-(

Are TVs really that big of a seller for the holidays? Do people gift others with TVs? Do people have money to splurge on a TV for themselves when they've spent so much money on others?

2011-11-06 08:15:42 PM
Only sixty-five inches? What a pathetic little plebeian. I bet you're too cheap to upgrade from that DVD player, too.

Sounds like time form em to replace the 40" with a 65" and move to old TV to be my computer monitor.

Yep, did all my upgrades last Xmas, stayed up all night and farted around watching Netflix. Arrived at the HHGregg at 0430 and the lines were out the door, same with BB and a couple of other places. My work was done by 0930. I did a quick comparison with some of the smaller LCD TV's at HHG and the cheaper Chinese junk was shockingly bad picture wise. I paid a bit extra for a much brighter picture. No regrets.

Got the 63 inch Samsung Plasma 3D on a big sale though...had a 73 inch Mitsu DLP and loved it but the dead mirrors starting to crop up and the agonizingly slow warm up time was not missed. Never have used the 3D feature but I use the built in Netflix app all the time.

No fancy crap for me this Xmas. I want to continue bulking up my kitchen stuff and the wife knows it.

Looking for the same. The 3+ year old mistu 65" DLP we had is dying as the engine is slowly dying and "dead pixels" are creeping across the screen. It's pretty bad now..

I will never get another DLP, it was no where near as nice as cheaper lcd/plasmas

I'm always jealous of people who can add atmosphere to their house. However, question how come you actually have the lights plugged in to a socket, vs actually mounting fixture lights?

Okay, old fart here needs advice. My Hitachi 53" rear projection TV from about 10 years ago went tango-uniform last month and we dragged out the 1984 27" JVC to tide us over until the holiday season sales.

What should I buy? 32" seems too small. My wife thinks the 53" is too large, but I like it and think I'd like it even better with HD.

Input is solicited.

Unless you're like 3-4 feet from your tv, 42 inch is far from ideal. I'm around 8 ft from my 55 inch and could see going bigger in the future.

I still have a 25" CRT TV. I've been waiting for years for 40" (or better) LCDs to drop below $300, before I get one. Looks like this might be the year. Woo hoo!

Go as big as your budget will allow, standard size for a large is around 55". Take the wife to the store to see the tvs. It'll look smaller in the store than it will in the house and I imagine she'll be impressed with the fact that they are an inch thin now and thus a large tv won't look as out of place as a rear projection would.

We are about 6 foot from ours, and it seems to work out OK. For the record, Im not much of a TV watcher either... I play games on it sometimes, and the random movie.

My parents have one of those 70 monstrosities and it's just.... egh! It's so big, you cant watch the whole thing at once is seems :P

I'm still stuck with my 13" (yes - THIRTEEN!) CRT TV with a VCR built into the bottom. The only reason I even have that is so the wife and I can play those fitness games on the Wii.

Anything I want to actually watch is done through the computer (NTSC tuner card is a great thingy to have!)

/your mileage may vary

Did you have to get the digital converter for that, or is it new enough that it has it built in? Between that card and cable internet, I bet I could drop cable television altogether...

2011-11-06 09:24:38 PM
Weird, I must have accidentally selected only that part of the text. i was referencing the NTSC Tuner Card. Wikipedia says the standard is now ATSC for digital, but there is no hi-def, still the old standard resolution. All i want is local news, though, so that wouldn't be a big deal.

I still have a 720p 42" Panasonic plasma from 2005 that still works just fine - especially since i don't have sat/cable snd just stream Netflix on it...

Rather spend my $$ on a new road bike - thinking it might be a Fuji or Scott xmas...

I think mine's 115" on the diagonal. I can't measure it that way though; it's 56 inches top to bottom, at a 16:9 ratio. 6 year old Optoma DLP projector still on the first bulb, thing is holding up like a beast.

The paintings (?) would be nice elsewhere. They're competing for attention with the "TV."

The additional lighting will wear your eyes out quicker.

Personally, I would put them behind the couch.

Try TV alone on wall (or with very minimalist decor) with low lighting flanking both sides. Warm, soft lights just behind the seating area would be ideal.

Pythagoras says its ~114.22 inches diagonal, so that is a pretty good guess.GBmanNC: StoneColdAtheist: Okay, old fart here needs advice. Also make sure that you have an HD source for it like a Blu-ray player or an HD satellite (HD cable is not very HD in most cases, so I don't count it) hooked up with HDMI cables. Most Blu-ray players come with one, but pop the box open after you buy it to see before you leave the store. Also, super expensive HDMI cables are not better then the cheap ones. Just make sure they are HDMI 1.3 or higher compliant.

\it always sucks when things go tango-uniform

Absolutely. When it was time to replace our bedroom TV (the power module on the old CRT went out for the 4th time in 7 years) I shopped for Black Friday deals on a 32". I wound up buying a Toshiba from Newegg since for the same money I would spend at Best Buy or any other brick and mortar store for the same model I got the TV, free shipping, and a 3-year extended warranty beyond the manufacturer's warranty. No sales tax was the icing on the cake. I haven't been out on Black Friday in six or seven years since I can almost always do as well or better online.
