One of my friends was laid off and when he found a new job his pay went from $75k to a little over $40k. He petitioned the court to get his nearly $1000 a month support modified to reflect his current salary and was denied. The advice that the judge gave him was to get a second job so that he could eat and keep a roof over his head and make the support payments.

Its so screwed up that the American child support system doesn't just automatically adjust his payments in this situation. "I don't make 12 million dollars a year anymore, you need to make my child support payments lower." There is NO reason this needs to be a court case.

Also, lets be goddamn fair about the price of raising a child. If he's kicking in more than 50k a year (and that's on the high side for what it actually costs to provide for a child) that's criminal. Kid could go to crazy expensive private school for the obscenely rich on that and let the mother feed/clothe him. She probably gets about that much a month, like the man's a limitless cash cow.
