Good color choice, a bit heavy on the application.

That is some bullshiat right there.

Tennessee schools are notorious for their homophobia. So that's no surprise.

Eye shadow on guys isn't that bad. It's the eye shadow with the feral, un-showered pairing that I don't get.

Clearly makeup and long hair only disrupt if men wear them.

FTA: 'In matters of opinion, the judgment of the teachers and administrators will prevail.'

So pretty much in every situation the student will lose.

Richard Vernon: You're not fooling anyone, Bender. The next screw that falls out will be you.

John Bender: Eat my shorts.

Richard Vernon: What was that?

John Bender: Eat... My... Shorts.

Richard Vernon: You just bought yourself another Saturday.

John Bender: Ooh, I'm crushed.

Richard Vernon: You just bought one more.

not now that the LGBT community has sprung into action.

After the suspension caught the attention of The Tennessee Equality Project and LGBTQNation, Kasey's suspension was reversed, and a new school policy allowing all students to wear make-up was put in place.

Superintendent Wilkinson said: 'I guess that the easiest thing to do would be to go to a standard policy but we have in the past given a little freedom to our children and their parents about what they choose the wear.'

I'm torn. If a high-school kid wants to wear make-up to school, he's old enough and mature enough to make that decision. However it's shiat like this:

Kasey said he has suffered from depression in the past by not being able to express himself at school.

... that make me not want to be on his side. When I was in school, facial hair was disallowed, along with short skirts and t-shirts with questionable saying on them, and no one was depressed about it. We found other outlets of self-expression, like talking, writing, art, or music.

2011-11-06 11:02:30 AM
If he's going to wear eye shadow that bold, he should really clean up those yeti eyebrows first.

2011-11-06 11:02:36 AM
He shouldn't be suspended for wearing it but for wearing too much....needs to shave too. I once had to turn a tee shirt inside out my sophomore year because there was a bird 's skull on it.

Yeah, but it's still nice that he/she still spoke out knowing how idiotic/homophobic the administrative staff were.

If it stays on your record applying to colleges, what the heck, throw a note in there about what happened and cite a news report.

FTA: The 11th grader also said that another 'punk-rock' student who had been wearing make-up that same day was not reprimanded. 'He had it on all day, and I was like, "If he can wear make-up, so can I,"' Kasey told WBBJ-TV.

If that's true, that school's administration may be in for a visit by ACLU.

/WBBJ-TV is kinda funny given the context

The punk rock kid can, but he's can't.

That's the crux of it for me.

I had a bi friend growing up who wore makeup and long skirts occasionally - but he went to a all-boy's Catholic school. The thing is, the rules were applied both harshly AND evenly - so the wannabe frat kid wearing a hemp necklace had to take it off when caught, just like my friend did.

He tried to skirt the edge of appropriateness, but mainly just went all-effing-out when not on school grounds.

/shrug

Just like a dog that treats every problem by barking at it, your average school official thinks every problem (real or perceived) can be fixed easily by issuing suspensions.

Corollary: You average school official has the intelligence of your basic mutt.

Ever notice that when some student gets punished for something that 'may cause a disruption' most of the time the only disruption that ever happens is caused by those in charge ranting about some perceived breach of rule that is no big deal to anyone else?

That boy does his makeup better than 90% of the female population at that school. If you want his suspension to be fair, suspend all of them too.

No Such Agency:
School should not be a prison.

They aren't. Schools are about turning happy, imaginative children in to obedient and compliant worker drones for corporations. They're about demonstrating to kids that the easiest way of getting through life is STFU, keep your head down, nobody cares that people are mistreating you and GBTW.

Mandating that the children appear ready for their 'work day' in suits would go a long way to reinforcing the mentality that you are a drone and should behave as such.

I wish the education system wasn't designed to do this but it is and has been for a very long time. Any parent using state education should carefully plan out how to teach your child critical thinking skills.

If I ever have kids, I'm going to have them post on the Fark Politics threads more, to ready them for the real world.

And here's the handbook. (new window) They have a pretty strict dress code. Not very surprising for an institution in which "patriotic observances" are compulsory.

Most people aren't good for anything but being drones. The system reflects this.

I have felt that way for years. The schools are there not to educate, but to indoctrinate and create a sense of conformity, where any sign of individualism is quickly crushed.

Gotta protect the Status Quo, peeps.
