BTW, the real hero looks nothing like Gerard Butler who plays him in the movie....the real guy is no leading man material

It's incredibly heroic, but sad at the same time. He saves these children's lives, but refuses to save their soul by helping them convert to Christianity.

AverageAmericanGuy: He saves these children's lives, but refuses to save their soul by helping them convert to Christianity.

Funny, not what he said, he seems pretty open about who he is and what he believes, he just doesn't make it a pre-requisite to get help from him. Best kind of Christian IMHO.

seems obvious, but it's early, the judges will reserve on the scoring until it's evident how many suckers are out at this hour.

Athiest, agnostic, whatever - whenever someone is introspective enough to find means to refix their resolve toward helping others, toward reaching out - extending themselves and at least (succeed or fail) attempt to better themselves and others - I make a very humbling recognition toward those efforts. I only wish I could find means to channel some/most of myself in similar manners. It's got to be an incredibly ballsy move, etc - but I so wish I could contribute, or otherwise allocate my life's purpose to accomplish such things.

God bless and nothing but quality props to him/them/all of those out there that don't just yap about 'the walk' - but those that 'walk the walk'. You are all quality humans and I pray I can find the same resolve towards the betterment of others.

wikipedia

Originally Kony's group was named the United Holy Salvation Army (UHSA) and was not perceived as a threat by the NRA. By 1988, with the accord between NRA and the Uganda People's Democratic Army and addition of its remnant troops as well as forced recruitment of children the United Holy Salvation Army was becoming a formidable resistance army. The bulk of his foot soldiers were children. He is estimated to have taken 104,000 or more boys and girls since the LRA started fighting in 1986. He often killed their family and neighbors when abducting these children, forcing them to fight for him.[7] With these remnants of UPDA was commander Odong Latek, who convinced Kony to use standard military tactics as opposed to its previous attempts which involved attacking in cross-shaped formations and the use of holy water.

Didn't hear anything about him converting people at gunpoint. He sounds like a pretty liberal Jesus guy in an extraordinary situation. Hardly what I would consider an extremist.

Watched the film last week.
Minus the fundie stuff, the movie and what that guy is doing are pretty fantastic.

No, he doesn't preach sky wizard in Sudan.

Just feeds and shelters kids in the heart of a really nasty war zone.

That's a really badass story. Unfortunately, I can't stand Gerard Butler. The movie will be watched, regardless. Also, the second I saw he was in Sudan, it instantly reminded me of this song* (new window).

The sweetest most soft-spoken and devout Catholic priest I ever knew, a guy who was a dead ringer for Kris Kringle in "Miracle on 43th street"; had been a CIA counter-intelligence officer. It rarely came up but when it did, you were reminded of just how interesting a guy this cat really was.

For example, when a parishioner's husband was kidnapped in Columbia, by one of the kidnapping cartels that operated down there in the 90's; he was able to make a half-dozen phone calls and suddenly the guy was released, unharmed, with an apology.

Maybe, it's the result of being educated by the order of priests who jokingly call themselves "God's Marines", but I personally don't see any contradiction between being a devout Christian, and righting certain wrongs by force of arms when necessary. Even Jesus resorted to violence when he felt it was necessary to correct a grave injustice. To be sure it must be a LAST resort, but sometimes it is necessary to do a small evil to prevent a larger one, and putting one between the eyes of an LRA member who was trying to murder a child, or force a child to murder their parents certainly qualifies as one of those times in my book.

In fact, as I see it, that person took their lives into their own hands when they tried to murder another person, and the guilt of their death is on their own hands not the person who stops them

He is someone who gets the Christian thing. The Christian thing is to love and help your neighbor regardless of who they are and what they believe, and hope that they will learn about your religion and convert. That is what hes practicing.

Most of us go through our lives without even trying to do this, give the man credit for trying to live up to an ideal.

I love the part where everyone claims the "Lords" support as they exterminate everyone that doesn't believe in their "Lord".

Religions of peace. Gods of love.

When you follow the circular argument long enough, you get so dizzy that it all makes perfect sense.

As everyone who does not believe in my God. You too shall find the eternal punishment for your wicked ways when you receive the 7.62mm sacrament.

"I believe in freedom. Jesus Christ was all about freedom. So what I'm saying is, I fight for that freedom. I am a freedom fighter, but me and my family, we choose to serve Jesus Christ," he declares.

There's no religious test to get into his orphanage or feeding programs, he says.

"We feed about 3,500 meals a day right now. I've never asked a child, 'Are you Christian or are you Muslim?' Never will," he insists.

That's true Christianity and something I can get behind.

Actually, there are reports that claim at least some of this guy's orphanages are managed badly with sick children, from a doctor at baylor college of medicine. and he is not around them much. This guy may not be a hero after all.

That said, my best friend is a former Mr. (state name) and former 3rd Runner Up Mr. America, former drug runner, dealer and several other criminal titles, reformed as a Born Again Christian and now serves in Prison Ministries in the most bad ass Federal lockups out there.
