farkingatwork: nukeim: The entire public consists of disaster pussies.

So, anytime you want to go jump in some lava? Surely you're not going to pussy out, are ya?

I'm just saying California needs to grow a pair if they really think earthquakes and rain are unusual events worth freaking out over on the weatherward side of a continent, in Ring of Fire territory.

pyrion: fn129: One big jolt in the New Madrid zone and you can kiss Memphis and St. Louis goodbye. Those cities are simply not equipped to handle quakes like they probably should.

In much the same regard, one freak hurricane in California would effectively wash half the state away.

If this keeps happening, they'll just pick up and move.

Cute shirt. Not entirely accurate, but still funny.

Yep. Oklahoma's like Barry Manilow music: deep down you don't really hate it, but it's fun to make fun of it.

We are a quirky bunch, too. At least it's not like Oregon, which is more like Justin Beiber music: It's popular, but there's no good reason why.

peterthx: Worst case scenario: San Andreas rips big time, the western half of CA abruptly shifts north 10-30 feet.

Yeah, great... because if there's anything Oregon needs, it's more California. What would it take to make the "Arizona Bay" idea happen? Let's make it so.

L33t Squirrel: The first thing to come to mind was, "oh, earthquake, haven't felt one of those in a while." The second was, "wait, this is Oklahoma, WTF are these shenanigans?! o_O" I feel a bit like the Rain God from Hitchhiker's Guide, but with earthquakes. :P

That was my reaction to the Norman Quake in 2010; felt it in Tulsa.

That's the strangest thing to me right there; you don't tend to feel much outside of a small-ish radius back home. Here, the damn thing carries without diminishing for miiiiiiles. Granted, I felt Loma Prieta all the way out in Stockton, but that one was effing HUGE. This one was only 5.6, centered east of OKC, and it was still strong enough to break plaster and knock things off of shelves out here. Weeeeeeird.

The house begins to shake!
You're bouncing across the floor
and watching all your dishes break!

You're sleeping, there's a quake!
You're instantly awake!
You're leaping out of bed
and shouting "Oh, for heaven's sake!"

Not really that weird, California's on the edge of a plate, when you get earthquakes there, it's the Pacific and North American plates rubbing together. In the middle of the continent, it's the continent itself breaking and settling.

*Nod.* It's less "how the hell does that happen" weird and more "it's strange/interesting how different it works" weird. To be honest, I'm more worried about a damaging quake out here than back home for that reason as well, given that buildings here are made to a different standard. Perhaps I should've gone for a degree in seismology and the like, 'cause this stuff (and vulcanology, too) is pretty nifty.

From earthquakes to tornadoes in less than a couple of days, stay safe down there.

Thanks. Personally, I think that Captain Planet is getting sh*tfaced nearby or something, 'cause between this weekend's quakes, today's thunderstorm, and impending tornadoes, I'm just waiting for a wildfire to catch and to suffer a heart attack or something. Gaia and I are not amused!

Oh, yes. Makes me wonder how the old Talihina post office is holding up after the shakeup. Volcanos fark with my head a bit more: When I first moved to Oklahoma, I had recently spent five years living in Wood Village. There, the sirens mean "lahar." As in, you have about 90 minutes to get everything you hold dear in your car and get out of town to higher ground before everything gets engulfed in a wall of boiling mud and burning trees from a vaporized glacier flash-flooding the Sandy River.

So, three days after landing in Oklahoma, I'm on a road trip in Great Bend, KS. And the sirens go off while myself and a couple friends are in the car. My immediate reaction was to look north, then east, to see which volcano blew up, only to see flat, and more flat. Then said out loud, "Oh, wait, that's not what that siren means here..." and had to explain what I thought it was to everyone else in the car...

Aaaaaaaand there goes another. It felt like a gentle rocking, so I wouldn't put this much past 4.5 or so. Criminy, it's almost like clockwork by now, WTF. Off to check USGS...

Seemed stronger to me than the earlier one, but maybe because it was happening in the middle of a THUNDERSTORM! My wife was all "It's another earthquake, what do we do!?!" I was like, "I'm more worried that it could be a tornado, we're in a tornado watch, after all."

Turned out she was right about it being a quake... USGS says 4.7. Sweet. Thunderstorm, tornado watch *and* earthquakes. Oklahoma ROCKS!

I was sitting in a craptastic furnished-apartment chair, so yeah, I noticed it. Also, I almost called the magnitude. Whoo! :P

Located outta Abilene TX

Yeah, felt it. Honestly thought my wife had snuck in the room while I was playing a comp. game and was shaking my chair to get my attention. Then I wondered "Wth, was that the wind or a damn earthquake?" Surprised it was an earthquake.
