You hunt bears long enough and you forget that some of them have flame throwers.

Remember a few weeks ago here when somebody said it was safe to shoot tigers from a tree stand? Somebody has died in a tree stand related incident every week since.

I think I'll take my chance with the tigers.

I may have found the problem....

Little known fact: In some states there are more accidental hunting deaths from tree stands than guns alone, a lot more.

Hopheavy: Little known fact: In some states there are more accidental hunting deaths from tree stands than guns alone, a lot more.

Anecdotally, gun deaths are fairly rare. I grew up in a VERY heavy hunting area (Actually had a large number of tourist hunters every year in addition to the locals). I remember maybe 2 gun related accidents in the 10 or so years I actively hunted up there. But every year you had guys falling out of trees, wrapping their ATV's around trees, having trees blown down on them...

Wait a tick, I'm seeing a pattern here...

BAN THE TREES!

Sometimes stop, drop and roll may not be the best course of action.

Yeah, this doesn't have anything to do with the article, which I dnfr. I just saw the picture and had to share:

The guy might not have thought the stop, drop and roll rule all the way threw.

you can do better than anecdotally - gun deaths from hunting accidents number in the single digits in Minnesota and Wisconsin every year since mandadory hunter education and blaze orange requirements were enacted a few decades ago. Given that there's more than 1 MILLION rifle deer hunters in the two states combined, that is a pretty amazing statistic. Hunting is far safer than driving to the store for groceries

Build a man a fire, and he'll be warm for a day. Set a man on fire, and he'll be warm for the rest of his life.

He was 84 years old and still hauling his ass out into the woods, allow him his heater.

FTA: According to the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office, Knafla was attempting to light a propane heater in his partially enclosed deer stand when his clothes caught fire. Knafla then fell from his deer stand.

He became a shooting star but for hunters.

"Hey! Look, Joe-Bob! A shooting star! Hurry up and make a wish."

Here in backwoods WV, it's a close tie between tractor and hunting accidents for reducing the elderly redneck population. It's kind of tough on the rest of the age groups as well.

Hell my grandpa just sticks his gun out the window and shoots. I figure the man is 90 years old and deserves a break.

I just hope that when I'm 90 I can still stick anything anywhere.

At my granddad's farm in backwoods north carolina a deer stand consisted of a ladder and a 55 gallon drum bolted to a pine tree. They were still being used 30 years ago when I was a kid. What's left of the drums are still up there rusting away.

/like someone else said, good for the old guy that at his age, he was still able to haul his ass up a tree with gear. Not so great the way it ended though.

I actually went and looked up the hunting regulations, so I could abuse him further if Minnesota allowed baiting. But they don't. That's how people hunt in Michigan--lay out that bait pile for a few weeks, wait for hunting season to start, go out to your bait pile and wait. Now that's hunting!

/they don't all do that. But it's legal

Wouldn't running a propane heater in the woods pretty much warn off the deer? The smell, the slight hissing sound that most heaters make... the deer have extremely sharp senses of hearing and smell, IIRC.

Tarmangani: Wouldn't running a propane heater in the woods pretty much warn off the deer? The smell, the slight hissing sound that most heaters make... the deer have extremely sharp senses of hearing and smell, IIRC.

A tree stand should almost always be downwind from the projected path of the deer, and the hissing is easily drowned out by the wind and rustle of the foliage.

And the screams of a burning hunter? Kinda hard to mask that.
