Flint Ironstag: Some more pictures and details.

This was bonfire night so some suspect smoke from a fire could have caused the accident.

WTF did the greenlight go to the New York Daily News? Better stories and pics in the Brit papers.

All the fireworks speculation and the like is media bollocks. It was caused by someone travelling far to slow to merge from sliproad onto the main carriageway just pulling out anyway, causing an HGV to brake/swerve and setting off the horrendous chain of events.

The "speed kills" folk are frothing at the mouth over this tragedy though. Like travelling slower would make any difference at all when it's car after car after car driving 6 feet from each others bumper in heavy fog and idiots with no idea how to drive on a motorway that are really the problem.

2011-11-06 03:16:45 AM
Well if this was really a Michael Bay movie, where are the jiggling breasts in slow motion?

2011-11-06 03:17:12 AM
The guy who saved the baby has said as much: "We managed to stop because we had just joined the motorway and were not going too fast"

WTF? You do not join a motorway and then speed up to motorway speed. If you do, shiat like this happens.

GreenSun: Well if this was really a Michael Bay movie, where are the jiggling breasts in slow motion?

Agreed. I will be back to this thread to ensure that it delivers on his request. Do not disappoint me, farkers.

There had better be jiggling.

Beat me to it. Oh well. I wonder how thick the smoke must have been to completely obscure all of the WRONG WAY signs that they drove by.

2011-11-06 03:37:55 AM
It is because they drive on the wrong side of the road.
And it is a road or a highway, not a carriageway, when was the last time anyone was in a carriage; in fact raise your hand if you have ever been in a carriage.

Well, the left one's one on the side of the road, and the right one's under the wheel of some burnt-out wreckage.

More than 30 cars and six articulated lorries cannoned into each other after "a black fog as thick as emulsion suddenly descended" on Friday night.

I like my emulsions like I like my women - flocculating, creaming, and coalescencing.

Yeah, from what little I've read this morning it seems likely to me that they drove into a thick fog bank, someone must have panicked and slowed down, as a result vehicles behind all piled in. I know the area, and there's no way there are enough people there to even make a light cloud from fireworks/bonfires, let alone such a huge fog bank.

I was always under the assumption that car was short for carriage. Not a horse drawn carriage, but a carriage none-the-less.

Excellent mystery/suspense flick, BTW. Even had an ex-Doctor Who in it. Available streaming on Netflix.

I didn't understand all the firework stuff either. Or the neighbors having a bonfire. If there was serious fog, wtf do the fireworks and bonfire have to do with anything? You wouldn't have been able to see them.

No, it was a holiday, EVERYBODY was having a bonfire/fireworks. It wasnt just foggy, it was smoky. Have you ever been near the launch site of a bunch of fireworks or anything?

"Authorities told London's Telegraph that heavy fog and wet weather caused bad driving conditions on a highway"

heavy fog and wet weather? In England? I bet nobody saw THAT coming.

2011-11-06 06:24:07 AM
We had this happen in Tampa a few years ago, fog mixed with smoke from a nearby fire and an entire stretch of I-4 became zero visibility in the span of a minute or so. The carnage was so bad, and the smog so thick, that responding emergency crews had to have paramedics get out, and guide them on foot. There was a sheriff's deputy in the middle of it, calling for help as it was happening, and all you could hear was complete destruction everywhere around him.

It was Guy Fawkes night (think 4th of July, but with quiet sense of superiority). There was a bonfire/fireworks show at a Rugby (think American football, but with a quiet sense of superiority) club which is located pretty much next to the motorway. Smoke may well have drifted over the road, but reports are pretty varied.

Cute little young america. Didn`t you have roads and carriages at the same time? are you so young that you had cars when you built roads? Thats so cute... (pats head) now run along, nanny wants to put you back in the cot.

It`s the fault of people who panic. It`s the fault of people entering a fog bank then QUICKLY SLOWING DOWN A LOT AND NOT CHANGING LANE TO THE SLOW LANE meaning that there are very slow cars WHERE FAST CARS SHOULD BE JUST WHERE YOU CANNOT SEE THEM. Also trucks just can`t slow down quickly, if you are greatly slower than a truck IT WILL HIT YOU IN FOG. Mix slow cars, fast cars, trucks, and fog and what do you get? Bippedy Boppedy boo.

No, there was a fireworks show at a rugby club. A Rugby club is any club in the town of Rugby. A rugby club is a club for the sport of rugby (think American football without the girly pansy protective armour). A bonfire is literally burning the bones of your loved ones on all hallows eve to communicate with the spirits of the dead. Totally different day. Only morons mix them up.

It`s important because you would want to help your uncle Jack off a horse but not help your uncle jack off a horse...

I agree, Daily Mail article is better.

This happens in California every few years when there is fog in the Central Valley.

DJ Kulture

A serious accident in fog in the mid-1960s was Britain's excuse for imposing a speed limit on the motorways.

DJ Kulture: It was Guy Fawkes night (think 4th of July, but with quiet sense of superiority).

This may amaze you, but I don't think anyone in England actually compares Guy Fawkes night with the 4th of July, seeing as how they're celebrations of completely different events. Everyone doesn't stand around applauding themselves and saying "My gosh, aren't we just so superior to those boorish Americans". They're too busy watching the fireworks and having a good time.

On the other hand, you were obviously not watching fireworks, and not having a good time, which is why you find yourself making snarky comments on fark.

2011-11-06 07:25:53 AM
It could have been much, much worse.

At least the giant fireball lit up the road and provided some light for oncoming traffic.

There is a joke in here about the weather turning everyone into women and asians.... but I'm having trouble parsing it out.
