Hmm.... live on the streets with nothing, or get 3 square meals a day, free smokes, and air conditioning for free?

No wait...

We should immediately drop the remainder of his sentence because he clearly is too honest to be IN jail!

Smart guy, this way he avoids a manhunt and something that would come back to haunt him. Now perhaps the authorities can give him credit for doing the right thing?

Did he want to get closer to the three hookers from the previous thread ?

Dear fellas, I can't believe how fast things move on the outside. I saw an automobile once when I was a kid, but now they're everywhere. The world went and got itself in a big damn hurry. The parole board got me into this halfway house called "The Brewer" and a job bagging groceries at the Foodway. It's hard work and I try to keep up, but my hands hurt most of the time. I don't think the store manager likes me very much. Sometimes after work, I go to the park and feed the birds. I keep thinking Jake might just show up and say hello, but he never does. I hope wherever he is, he's doin' okay and makin' new friends. I have trouble sleepin' at night. I have bad dreams like I'm falling. I wake up scared. Sometimes it takes me a while to remember where I am. Maybe I should get me a gun and rob the Foodway so they'd send me home. I could shoot the manager while I was at it, sort of like a bonus. I guess I'm too old for that sort of nonsense any more. I don't like it here. I'm tired of being afraid all the time. I've decided not to stay. I doubt they'll kick up any fuss. Not for an old crook like me.

StrikitRich: And this made news in Australia because?

They like the story probably because they founded their country on the idea of not leaving the prison even if they could.

Wow!

This guy is either an "honest" man or someone who is keen on the whole "three hots and a cot" with unlimited PITA opportunities thing.

I hope the Australian reporter enjoyed the trip to Florida to report on this breaking news.

It's a jail, not a prison.

Also, he knows he is going to have to serve his time one way or another, may as well do the time now instead of risking the chance of being sent to a prison.

His underlying crime was a DUI, but he had a public defender, which probably means working poor. I doubt jail was a big step up in his lifestyle.

By the way, once the jail was wise to their error, he pretty much had to turn himself in. But why the fark did he call his public defender to double check in the first place? He possibly could have gone the rest of his life without the court system realizing their error.

I hope the they hook they guy up, make doing the right thing worthwhile. I mean, barring some serious shenanigans while inside, he's gotta be on the fast track for early release.

jail tends to be worse. you are locked in with people who typically haven't been charged yet. sure many many DUI's, drugs, etc,but lets not forget murder and rape too. unlike prison there aren't strict pecking orders as the line up is almost always changing. people may be looking to establish credit or get revenge in jail before prison. when i took criminal studies we were told by officers and staff that the jail was worse. several lawyers i have worked for have stated similar claims. although i guess it really depends on the prison and jail you wish to compare.

outside of a few studies, on site, i haven't been to either. hope to keep it that way

Right, because they give you (or even allow you to have) cigarettes in jail.
Whatever you say.

i would have done the same thing. better to serve what you were supposed to than get caught after the fact (regardless if it was the states fault) and end up being butt raped by the system for an error that happened to go in your favor. jail sucks. you do not want to tempt fate in these matters. i've had the honor of being arrested on more than one occasion. even a day or two in the joint, surrounded by societies castaways and tard carts, is enough for most reasonable people to deter them from doing ANYTHING that might get them sent back. all you "3 square meals and a comfy bed" folks have obviously never been to the other side of the tracks before, which is a good thing, don't get me wrong, but you have no idea what you're talking about. it is a cold, scary place and good-on that dude for turning himself in. it was the smart thing to do.

First thing he should have done is to get a notarized copy of that release order to his lawyer. Then take a second notarized copy and see his probation officer to start his 1 year.

Too much paperwork. Say what you want about Texas and Texas LEOs but they don't go out of their way to shoot people. It's a hell of a lot more paperwork.

/Non-Cool story, Bro: Friend was a Deputy (off duty) and ended up having to break up a kidnapping of an ex-spouse of the kidnapper, as he was in a car next to them and she saw his uniform and screamed for help. He got the gal out of the car from her ex but then got into what ended up a fatal fight (for the kidnapper, who had tried to use one of his duty arms to shoot HIM, the LEO). Cost him YEARS of his life, grand juries, civil suits, ended up having to change departments although he was never charged with any wrongdoing, all for saving a kidnap victim that had been repeatedly raped by a crackhead ex.

You obviously don't know dick about law enforcement in Texas or anywhere else. Shooting people is really low on the list of things to do for most all LEOs except, perhaps, Oakland PD this last week.

"Hey, I can pull the trigger, destroy my career, and be liable for civil suits both from the NON-victim and various advocates for the non-victim while not even getting thanked for saving a life and have people crucify me in the press when they don't even know the facts and the investigation has hardly begun into what ACTUALLY happened"...YEAH, that's the ticket, ticket to proving you a MORON...

I'm old and banned more than once, going back to the beginning, but I did have a point!

Sometimes I've had 18 beers and the "texans would shoot him first" shiat gets old, and I was born in Montana, FWIW.

Cheers,

free smokes? really? in a country where one cannot smoke in bars or restaurants, in some places even in public, you think prisoners are allowed to smoke, and are given their smokes for free.

i'm keeping an eye on you.

It never ceases to amaze me the lack of common sense individuals have... It doesn't matter what gender/racial/socioeconomic class one is from, common sense is rampantly lacked. It's simultaneously funny, but sad.
