He'll be a great DH. Wait, what?

Except his "thome" is Cleveland.

Should be a good choice off the bench and as some backup for Howard. Who knows when he will be back.

I'm sure his fake injury is healing just fine.

On one hand, it wasn't likely that he was going to fit into Cleveland's lineup this upcoming season and he deserves a chance to chase a title in what will likely be his last season in baseball.

On the other hand...

Considering Howard is going to be out a lot if not all next year, he should play more than that.

This.

Think he's going into the HoF in a Phillies cap? You're fooling yourself.

So glad I can break my Thome jersey out of retirement. I hope they get him that ring. Cleveland sucks for claiming him instead of letting him get traded to Philly for a chance at a ring this past year.

How'd that work out for 'em?

They had a chance, they just decided to allow Saint Louis into the playoffs instead of rolling over for the already-dead Atlanta. Cleveland still sucks.

Why a globe article, submitter? Before I clicked I thought the Sox had signed him or something.

Thome doing the rounds again? So white sox in 2013?

Would losing to the D-backs have felt better?

An interesting signing for the Phils.
Man's not been in the field in a few years, so that'll be a problem.

He played one pitch at third base for the Indians this season.

Wouldn't have happened. The D-backs were almost as dead as Atlanta. The one team that had a chance to beat them out of the four postseason possibles was the Cardinals.

If you shoot Marcum in the leg, there was a chance for the Brewers. Nah.

What? You can't wear a jersey of a player that left? Jeez, guess I better never wear my Lakers Shaq jersey, my Napolean Kaufman jersey, my Angels Teixiera jersey, etc. Fark that jazz

What I like to do is pull for my favorite teams to sign players with my last name (Jones is extremely common) so that, when they inevitably leave Cleveland, I can snag their jerseys on eBay for dirt cheap and - presto - instant personalized team jersey.

He's not retiring?

Wait, isn't Jamie Moyer supposed to come back for the Phillies next year too? Jesus.

I really want Moyer to pitch in his 50s.

He's going to sign with the White Sox after next year to keep the rotation going.

There are extenuating circumstances that make those jerseys acceptable to wear.. Shaq won how many championships with the Lakers? That's fine to wear. Kaufman is kind of a throwback at this point so that jersey is OK but at 10+ years post-retirement and with a career that wasn't exactly noteworthy you might consider hanging that one up. Teixeira is right out as he only played a third of a season with the Angels. Why the hell did you even buy that? And why would you want to wear it anymore?

Thome had a good couple of years for the Philies and really got them going in the right direction, but he isn't transcendent enough as a Phillie to warrant dispensation to wear his jersey once he left the team.

Toe-me. The headline doesn't really work.

Because jerseys of players that are no longer on the team are dirt cheap, just like AL West champion jackets and Angels themed All Star game apparel was. I could care less that it's "expired". That shiat is a ripoff if you buy it at retail

Don't be a douche. You can't spell Thome w/o home.

/also thought he must have re-signed from the headline.

Thome has a really good reputation with Phillies fans, so he's coming back to a very welcoming fanbase.

He will indeed probably fill in for Howard while he's gone, then we can replace the ever-horrible Ross Gload finally with Thome for PH situations.
