Mugato: Sure, Goodfellas is the better movie, obviously. Batman might have paid better though.

Probably not. The legend goes that Burton couldn't afford Nicholson, so Nicholson did it for scale and a percentage of the profits (that's how he got paid millions for doing Joker), because Nicholson saw a marketing blitz in the Batman franchise. Meanwhile, Scorcese had a big budget, and a relatively unknown Liotta (but still sriding his Field of Dreams clout) was about to burst on the scene with a Scorcese flick starring alongside DeNiro, Pesci, etc. There would never have been a moment's hesitation if I were in his place.

IgG4: So naturally you go with Keaton as your backup...

Keaton was and will always be the best Batman.

no, you're thinking of that one Scorsese movie where he uses lots of Rolling Stones songs.

You know. that one movie of his, with the Stones on the soundtrack. I forget which one that is.

Last Temptation of Christ

I think he meant Age of Innocence. Or was it Kundun?

That one with DeNiro in it. Or was it DiCaprio?

Ooh, I can't remember, but I know his mom had a bit part.

Is it the one where all the female characters were all either Madonnas or whores?

Ray Liotta looks like my dad, who died a long long time ago, so I've always had a thing for him. I guess I can't fark him though. Wait, do I have daddy issues because of that? Does that mean I can?

DjangoStonereaver: Peter Weller would have been wonderful as Batman.

Pity he's too old now.

Weller wouldn't be too old for a "Dark Knight Returns" movie, though.

And I think I know someone who would make a PERFECT Robin for that project:

"Owen, a word with you, if I might?"

"Is this about me sleeping with your sister again, Sy?"

"Yes, but now I'm begging you to reconsider. She's going through a tough dry spell, she could really use it."

"No can do, bro. You know my rule."

"Yeah, you won't sleep with girls who look like Ray Liotta."

"Bingo, and your sister is Totes Liotes."

I would comment how really farked up Liotta would've been as Batman, but I'm still trying to get my mind around him being Bruce Wayne, and the fark that,,, well,,, it would be Ray Liotta playing Batman? No way. I farking love Ray liotta in every thing he's done but Batman? Ray in his age would've been the perfect Scare Crow or 2 face. 2 face becasuse he has a face large enough to accommodate 2 face's, and Scarecrow because he's farking Ray Liotta. But no,,, he could never play Batman or Joker for that matter. Hell of a 2 face though.

People mock Burton Batman, but I loved it.

Sure, it was a little cartoonish, but coming after the TV show, it was downright realistic!
The sets and everything else pulled off what so few movies have done well, a dystopia. All of the sets had an interior/cramped feel, be it the streets, even the rooftops felt like they were in a cave. The kind of crowding where villians will thrive and a hero will be needed. Still feels, to this day, somewhat like The Crow and Dark City.

That is the one thing I have against the "modern" batman. It's all action, and a backdrop with little to no work put into it.Sure, the acting and writing is good, characters are dark, etc. But the background? Modern City USA. Blech and boring. I don't buy the hero/villian bit, because we have no hero's and no real villians. Plenty of bad people, and good people, but no real masterminds of epic proportions on either side of the fence. The realism, in these movies, it was spoils the suspension of disbelief, through association with modern times.

I must disagree. I loved Batman "89" so let''s get that out of the way. IMO Nicholsons joker was the best. Many if not most would disagree. However, Nolans 2 movies more then made up for the lack of the 90's franchise. Batman Begins IMO was as good as Batman "89" and "the Dark Knight" blew away the 90's sequals. IMO the only redeeming qualities in the Batman movies of the 90's was Jack as the Jocker (actually 89) and Jim Carry as the Riddler. Those 2 were absolutely tops in my book. Tommy Lee Jones? Horrible. Danny Divito? Deplorable. Michelle Pfeiffer well OK. Fact is(or my opinion) is Nolans movies were better. Much better.

I liked Batman Returns. It was more atmospheric, and I liked the dialog and chemistry between Batman and Catwoman. And it had Walken. Carrey was okay as the Riddler but his part was so badly written. Like for instance, he didn't have any riddles. They were just nursery rhymes the big payoff of which was spelling out his name. By then it didn't matter because the Schumacker ones were shiat.

I liked Nicholson's Joker, but it seemed to me that he was playing himself . With the Nolan reboot, however, I was stunned by Ledger's portrayal of the same character.

/ real acting
// not expecting much from an actor that I considered lightweight (eg. "The Patriot") probably helped.

My impression at the time was that Burton was interested in him for "Batman," not for Batman (the role). There was talk then that he would make a perfect Joker, and I still think that would have been solid casting.
