Maybe not quite as long, but there's also the mine fire in Centralia, Pennsylvania (new window). It's been burning since 1962.

This is the one I was thinking about when I read the headline. I have a more than mild urge to drive through there someday, but I guess it's one of those things that will keep going for the rest of my life so no real rush.

That's probably why they used it as an inspiration for Silent Hill.

In 2010, only five homes remain as state officials try to vacate the remaining residents and demolish what is left of the town. As of May, the remaining residents are mounting another legal effort to reverse the 1992 eminent domain claim; they are currently awaiting a jury to begin proceedings.[9]..."

Yes, because it is theirs and they haven't died yet, so they must figure there's no reason to suddenly rush off. Not like they get anything to start a new life, and how normal could these folks be to integrate someplace new?

It is difficult for me to imagine being in that position.

I bet Obama set all those fires to burn up our fossil fuel reserves so that while he's president he can have us running on Sharia wind power.

2011-11-05 07:50:29 PM
I'm not sure which is funnier: that there is this fire in the first place, or that state officials think they can put it out somehow.

They think if only they can find all the cracks and seams they can seal them up somehow and starve the fire of oxygen. In a coal seam. In a mine. More than 100 feet underground. In the wilderness.

I mean, keep trying, guys, but you'd have better luck shooting bats with a slingshot and ball bearings in the dark.

I can't remember the name of the short story, but Stephen King wrote one about a town that had an underground coal mine fire that had gone on for decades, forcing the town above to be abandoned. But in the turn some guy who was a Satanist used the town for Black Masses that would help him become a successful person.

There's more than one mine fire in PA. I used to live near one. When I was a kid, my dad took me to a strip mine where sulfurous smoke occasionally leaked out of vents in the shale. I always thought it was volcanic when I was wee. Now I know better.

Well they did manage to cool it down by about 2,000 degrees, so there is that.

Putting out the fires in these places is not always *the most* valuable of goals. Years of scientific study, past and future, greatly increase our knowledge in several disciplines. Extinguishing one of these fires could end up being just the icing on the cake.

Love is a burning thing
And it makes a fiery ring
Bound by wild desire
I fell into a ring of fire

I fell into a burning ring of fire
I went down, down, down and the flames went higher
And it burns, burns, burns, the ring of fire
The ring of fire

I fell into a burning ring of fire
I went down, down, down and the flames went higher
And it burns, burns, burns, the ring of fire
The ring of fire

The taste of love is sweet
When hearts like ours meet
I fell for you like a child
Oh, but the fire went wild

I fell into a burning ring of fire
I went down, down, down and the flames went higher
And it burns, burns, burns, the ring of fire
The ring of fire

I fell into a burning ring of fire
I went down, down, down and the flames went higher
And it burns, burns, burns, the ring of fire
The ring of fire

And it burns, burns, burns, the ring of fire
The ring of fire
The ring of fire
The ring of fire

I live about 15 minutes away from Centralia and I find it fascinating. Winter really brings out the desolation and gloom. It actually kind of reminds me of 'Fallout' in a way. The roads are amazing to drive on though. The funny thing is that even though only a handful of people still live there you can always count on seeing a Nativity display at the intersection every Christmas. But if you want truly depressing, try Ashland. It's the next town over.

I would think that if you built a large enough pipe for water into the mine that it would eventually start effecting it. But a pipe wouldn't work maybe a ditch from a local water source.

Holy crap! That's my hometown on Fark. The ghost towns up Spring Canyon are really eerie. I used to go up there a lot with my family when I was a kid. I had no idea one of the old mines up there was still burning.

Lots of CSB's growing up in Helper, Price, and Castle Gate (which no longer exists as a town because of the Scofield Dam break).

It's on the edge of a desert and the town needs all the water it can get, so that's not really an option there.
