In this way, Congress isn't much different than corporate America - put rules in front of them, and they simply change the other rules to avoid any accountability or consequence for their continued bad behavior.

2011-11-05 11:47:40 AM
This is my shocked face.

/Oh wait, no it isn't.

2011-11-05 11:55:09 AM
Of course, the only cuts they want to avoid is the Pentagon cuts. F the rest of the budget.

"Senator Lindsey Graham, Republican of South Carolina, has drafted a bill that would replace the military reductions that would occur under a process known in Congress as sequestration with 5 percent cuts to other, unspecified parts of the federal budget, and a 10 percent decrease in pay for members of Congress. In the House, similar measures are being assembled. "

But hey, Congress may take a 10% cut to their over $150K salary, so that makes it all better, right?

2011-11-05 11:57:25 AM
Are there any parts of the budget *not* exempted from sequestration? And if so, would any of them survive?

2011-11-05 12:21:41 PM
Cut across the whole budget? I'm okay with that!

/Too bad Congress didn't put in a provision saying to overturn the law a super-majority was required. Of course, since they were always planning on changing the law if agreement couldn't be reached I'm not surprised.

2011-11-05 12:24:55 PM
I'll bet ending marijuana prohibition would save some money.

It's not cuts across the whole budget. Most of the spending is exempt.

2011-11-05 12:38:41 PM
Since they actually have to pass something to stop the cuts, I am not too concerned. They are good at failing to pass things. Not so good at passing things.

2011-11-05 12:39:49 PM
The WH should veto every single bill that tries to undo the automatic cuts. And if the Republicans are mad, they should look in the mirror. Their ridiculous pledge to never raise taxes is why they're worried now about military cuts.

GAT_00: The WH should veto every single bill that tries to undo the automatic cuts. And if the Republicans are mad, they should look in the mirror. Their ridiculous pledge to never raise taxes is why they're worried now about military cuts.

The thing is, most of military spending is exempt. The cuts would fall disproportionately on programs like WIC (not food stamps, they're exempt) and parts of Healthcare. I can't find a source that outlines exactly which programs are non-exempt, but WIC could be wiped out. Transportation? I don't know. I don't get why the GOP is freaking out. Defense is pretty well-protected.

I think I figured it out:

"About $5.2 billion in cuts in the other mandatory programs that are subject to sequestration, the biggest of which is farm price supports"

(My italics.) From the Center on Policy and Budget Priorities (new window).

I completely concur with your comments. Even though such military cuts would possibly impact me directly, I'd rather join my fellow Americans on Medicare and Social Security in the suffering than not.

In both cases its Congress that creates and then modifies the rules. Although the Executive Branch has gone out of its way to not enforce many of the rules in the first place.

You are mixing up your alphabet soup there Weaver, I thought it was the ATF that did all the large scale hits? DEA is usually on good for a few at a time, if you want to go 100+ then you send for the real experts.

Yes because the middle class should pay the money that they paid for Social Security and Medicare to use that money to pay for the tax cuts for the rich. How about NO.

Seriously I do not want to see defense cuts happen. I would rather see folks on welfare who are unemployed get cut instead of high paying jobs be cut. A person with $70,000 is more important than a person who only get $850 a month from the government for pretending to have autism and then get arrested for trespassing and assaulting a manager.

Transportation is a serious problem. We now have bikers on our nations roads where cars should be more than ever and our transportation policy is allowing this to happen which has hasten under the Obama administration. We should be banning bikes on our roads because they might hit drivers or even drivers kill the bikers and then the driver gets charged. Seriously we have 10 year olds biking on our nations major streets. We should consider taxing bicyclists and set up a bicycle license program in every state. Also a majority of bikers are a part of the OWS folks too. In Ohio, we're working on trying to get that to happen. Amtrak should be cut too. I wish people who have a car should pay their fair share of gasoline without having to get around this fee by taking mass transit or biking to work. Thanks to them, gas prices are higher because of falling demand.

Want to live in this nation? Get a license, get a car. It's the only way for poor people to get out of poverty.

Instant runnoff voting might help, not every solution has to be the optimal solution to an overarching problem. If it leaves us better off then our existing system then it should be given reasonable consideration.
