Man, that is pretty sad. A visit from Ali would be quite a story but we all know these guys aren't exactly Louis and Schmelling.

NYRBill: so the next headline will be "Frazier goes down!"

Ding, ding, ding! We have a winner!

I loved him on "The Simpsons."
"Homer, I know how you feel. You lost your couch. I lost the heavyweight championship."
"Pfft. There's like three of those."

If it had been cirrhosis, there would at least have been a Drinkin' Joe Frazier joke in it...

Yeah, because that will cure him.

That's sad, Joe is big hero (hoagie?) in the Philly area.

Article messes up the timeline tho' Foreman Frazier I is pre-thrilla in Manila, Foreman Frazier II is after.

Those fights were awsome. Professional fighting was ruined by pay per view, but that's another matter altogether (That's another matter.). I can't believe fighters like Frazier, Ali, and Forman live to be close to 7 or more decades considering the amount of battering their brain housing took. Amazing really. Good luck Joe.

Ali owes Frazier.

Like McEnroe owes Borg.

You know what it is sad(not as sad as this story, but still)?

Frazier doesn't have a statue in Philly, and Rocky Balboa does. And when Frazier does pass away, I bet you there will be a bunch of people to "right the wrong" and finally get him his statue.

Pathetic.

An incredible fight, I probably watch it once a week. That first knockdown still looks more like an off balance hit that got him down than a true knockdown but then Foreman saw red and just lays into him. No one could have survived those two rounds like that.

Just out of curiosity, why do you watch that fight once per week??
FWIW, I'm 23 years old, so I grew up in the PPV/Mike Tyson (shudder) era of boxing

It's a classic: Frazier undefeated champ vs Formen, undefeated challenger. Frazier's bob and weave, move in quick, killer left hook vs. Foreman's superior reach left jab and big right; either upper cut or straight. Foreman was regarded as a brawler, stay out of range and score points to win. The only problem is no one had managed to do that. To score means to hit and to hit means to get close. Round 1: Frazier comes out jab jab and then early on tags Foreman with a good left, not all his power behind it but if he could do that consistantly it would get to Foreman. Then Foreman starts jabbing back and they exchange blows then Foreman gets Frazier on his heels and a right hook puts Joe down. He's up quick but Foreman just moves in for the kill. Watch the fight, it's on for the ages. A testament to both men.
Foreman's power was amazing. Even what look like just set up blows for a combination were punishing. And that Joe got up is amazing too. If you google Foreman Tyson there's an interesting article on why that fight never came to be.

Rocky balboa brought as much to the city then Freizier if not more even though he was fictional. It's like someone being mad that some cop who actually busted a crapload of people in SanFfran that didn't get "Dirty Harry" limelight. That being being said , it's not Stalones fault the people of philliy don't even pay nessesary homage to there sports icons. I'm a north east Boston sports guy that rooted for frazier but would have never even knew Philly was on the map without Rocky.

Rocky V.

That invalidates everything Rocky ever did.

Had a program of his first fight with Ali. The one where he beat the hell out of the undefeated Ali. He was a classy, tough boxer. Good luck, smoking Joe. /donated the program to be auctioned for a coworkers kid with cancer.

This shiat again? That stupid statue was created for one of the ROCKY sequels. it's a movie prop! The film company 'donated" to the city and they didn't know what to do about it. They thought it might go at the top of the art museum stairs, because visitors to Philly--even now run the Art museum steps--many don't even go into the museum. The Art museum told them 'no way in hell' --get that hideous thing away from here. Then they moved it outside the Spectrum--which is ironic sionce the first Rocky fight was actually filmed in the Cicic Center, but called the Spectrum. The Spectrum is gone and they moved the statue on the street near the art museum. People in Philly laugh at that statue. It's only a-holes out of the area that think we worship a fictional character.
